I love this new piece from Levine's group show. The picture does a good job of showing the silkscreen face beneath the resin. Just phenomenal. Erik Mark Sandberg Youth with Particulate Mask and Collector Tee oil, resin, glitter and silkscreen on panel 20 x 16 inches

Haha, not sure if I'm down with his hairy people... Can you explain his process a little more gildo? Sounds like mixed media... So he doesn't paint the faces but he does everything else?

Haha, not sure if I'm down with his hairy people... Can you explain his process a little more gildo? Sounds like mixed media... So he doesn't paint the faces but he does everything else? I never saw this Sleep, sorry. I hope this answers your question. Erik's process is labor intensive. He studied printmaking intensively and in most of his published interviews he always talks about how important physicality is to his process. The man usually works 14+ our days in his studio. His Hairy Children series is inspired by the effects of pop culture on children. Each of these pieces is several layers of mixed media, but they all start off with an image (most often a silkscreen) of a beautiful child. Then you'll find layers of resin, glitter, cardboard, airbrush, oils and acrylics. I think the image of Youth With Particulate Mask captures this pretty well. Beneath the Silkscreen face you can see that the hair (in oil) is held in the resin. The mask is another layer of silkscreen and the shirt and background are painted and have glitter also captured in the resin. Lately, Erik has also produced some Hairy Teens and Adults. It's been interesting to watch his process and his muses grow up. He is also producing a lot more Etchings, silk-screens and Photoengravings.

thanks for this gil. i saw his work in person in miami this year and didn't appreciate the layering involved in his work before. Absolutely, my pleasure. Sven, I think the work he showed in Miami this year was focusing on etchings and printmaking so it makes sense that you wouldn't have seen as much layering as you would in his mixed media pieces. I know he is working on some special pieces at the moment. I'll post as soon as possible.

This piece was featured earlier this year at the SWAB International Contemporary Art Fair in Barcelona, Spain. I think it was early May.

It's a nice one. I wonder if it was very large or he just did his characters smaller.

It was 40X60 or a little a larger. It was a beautiful piece.
Erik's portraits are getting larger as well. A lot of the older portraits were 16X20 and he now has a couple that are around 20X30.
