After reading a few of these posts, I figured I would chime in. I must say I get a sense of headier than thou with this thread. Should prob bite my tongue here, but I believe that the forum and the artists threads are for conversation and not judging other people's motives, tastes, and decisions. Correct me if I am wrong but collecting art is a completely personal thing and a forum like this should be used to discuss the work. Healthy praise and healthy criticism is good, but individual EGO littered throughout these threads is not so good. Its sort of an oxymoron that people can be so petulant and all knowing at the same time. On a lighter note, there has been some great informative posts throughout this about Tauba. It would be very nice to get things moving back in that direction

Avert makes a good point. and ouch for those of you that considered this piece and then decided to pass..from a market standpoint.. which is clearly the primary driving force of most here. that's some sweeping statement, dude. Yes, avert makes many logical and good points, but could we also not consider those that passed on this piece true connoisseurs. People not wanting to settle for something they didn't love, even in the eye of financial gain. We have a nice group here. Lets keep it that way. Please keep your sales information to the sales threads.

Personally, I passed on the piece because it did little for me then. Admittedly, I knew at the time I might not get another chance at a true original and did strongly consider it for that sole reason. But it just didn't resonate with me. That has nothing to do with the series not being in a feature solo exhibition. So I passed. Does today's lofty result alter my perception of the strength of the painting? Not in the slightest. However, I'm not buying for prestige. I'm still hoping I'll get a crack at a painting that truly speaks to me. Luckily, I'm confident my motivations aren't misplaced yet

...and that's for pretty poor quality piece... i don't mean to be rude, and this isn't an insult to anyone here, but i really don't think you get it. i was talking with another forum member, one that also owns tauba originals (disclosure...i have an early letter based painting) and we were both confused why everyone was either questioning, or putting this painting down. one of my thoughts was that it wasn't what everyone is used to seeing...aka, it's not a fold painting. tauba seems to do a series of works and then changes it up a bit. i've seen 3 paintings done in this cmyk spray pattern style. it's an abstract painting and tauba is known as an abstract painter. if she had done a whole show of this style, i'm sure many of you would be calling it the greatest thing since sliced bread. i'm loving that seemingly several members passed on this piece, or had it pulled out from under them, only to see it sell for such a huge amount. a true moment of personal reflection. i think it's a nice little painting. $77K or $8k. it only makes you look bad to say it's a poor quality piece. with an auction sale at this amount, obviously it isn't a "poor quality piece." i wonder if the tauba fans out there are truly interested in the work, or just interested in the fame and dollar signs. I think a bit of the distaste around this painting comes from the way it was sleeperd around to anyone with even a bit of interest in Tauba's work as soon as she started becoming 'the next big thing'. Look, Tauba is an artist who seems to continually evolve and change up her output. It follows pretty naturally that not all of her work will appeal to everyone and those who don't find this particular piece appealing are not looking for 'fame and dollar signs.' I don't regret passing on the painting - it just doesn't do it for me. Even financially, its not like I would have plopped it right in a Phillips evening sale, so that potential profit is just a mirage. The only thing I DO regret is that the Tauba canvas I want is now probably a quarter million.

I look bad for not liking a painting that sold for a lot of money... Hmmm... Whatever you say dude. If that's your point of view and the conclusion that you want to draw about someone you know nothing about then that's your prerogative. Clearly you are far more enlightened than me and have far better taste so I will simply get my coat and leave the conversation to the intellectual heavy weights like yourself. Good day.

For someone who doesn't want to insult anyone you're doing a pretty bad job. Any more?

decided to finally grab one of the 50/50, Zoom In/Zoom Out etchings after contemplating on it for a few months as paulson are yoinking the prices up a notch again in a day or so.... i have the set of 4 of the other editions from this series, so i guess i'm all pixelled out now. Image size 43½" x 27½" Paper size 54" x 36½" Edition of 15 this one will cost a fair penny to frame i bet.

Was just taking a look through some of the Richter work at Tate and was happily surprised by this piece, "4096 Colors", he completed in 74. Seemed like a relevant post to get things back on track, especially in light of Sven's recent acquisition. Only knew of Gerhard for his foggy photorealism works, which are incredible. But even more blown away by some of his abstract works. Would be fun to be in London right now with all that's going on. Here's a couple of the more pertinent works in the exhibition.

i'm heading to london tomorrow for a few days. one of my friends is a richter obsessive - i'm hoping to check that show out with him, so that he can over-enthuse all over the place. i'm most interested in his abstract work - the colour chart paintings are quite wonderful walt.
tauba's colour etching is indeed quite reminiscent of the series.

Love Richter. Saw an amazing exhibition in Munich several years ago and later in SF. Breathtaking talent-- diverse as it is visionary.
Re Auerbach: I get the buzz, but not the obsession. Is it because I haven't seen the work live?

Just a heads up that those domestic lucky enough to grab a set of the Static prints, I got mine today. Never received any tracking or anything in the way of a confirmation email at all. Sounds like another friend in the States will have his tomorrow, according to the Fedex tracking he received from them. Clearly hit or miss on the communication level, perhaps relating to how much you contacted them. I almost never did. They appear to be sent directly from NYC, packaged by Griffin which is a very reputable company and shipped Fedex. So to my friends abroad, keep an eye out sometime next week if you haven't heard from them at all. I just opened mine and stopped after getting them out and seeing them all done up in a plastic bag. The corners looked fine so going to just wait to get them into the hands of my mounters. Any pictures anyone? Anybody else recieve theirs? I can't get them by phone or email. As per request, here you go. Please excuse the crappy pics, as well as the fact they're taken under mylar. Wanted to handle as little as possible, so put them straight in for time being. They really do look quite stellar, especially as a pair. Quite possibly the steal of the decade.
