-agreed, much nicer piece.... and price...lol bit off topic here, but i am glad you posted this.... as i really don't keep track of whats going on in the art auction world ( i probably should ) - so i typed in shepard fairey (because i own a lot of his work) -and saw a skate deck (bones ripper) go for $688 ! - almost positive i have one of those buried in the garage somewhere! -i think i am going on a hunting excursion today! ec

Looks like a pretty cool deck in a really low edition! Who knows what it'll go for in the usual selling venues for Shep's work - could be more or less. Auction house bidders may not necessarily be in touch with the market for the lower end Obey material, so I wouldn't put too much stock in the result.

it is a "highlight" of the night auction; really curious what will happen when a fold or similar more recent/significant work appears @ auction

Finally a strong tauba piece to hit the auction room.... this will be interesting indeed.
and agreed prpr, this kind of work is just the tip of the iceburg for her work auction wise but certainly its at the top of the pile so far.

Couldn't figure out how to embed the actual video into the post, but below link is to a video preview of the Tauba Auerbach "Binary Lowercase" (2006) going up for auction this week at Phillips de Pury. Provides an intimate look at the piece. phillipsdepury.com/video-player.aspx?sn=NY010112&lotnum=4

the speed that it actually got to that figure was also very impressive, i think it took about 7 seconds, the auctioneer was all over the place.

Fairly impressive result @ $86.5k. that result is nutty imho. that piece is just not that good.....at all. its sloppy if you really look at it. i suppose 86k is a drop in the bucket for some people though.

sloppy? seriously? it's hand painted. this isn't some gilcee pumped out in an unlimited run. and for being hand painted, it's damn good. if one has to get within 2 feet to see the brush work, it's a gob well done.

Im not a huge fan of this piece either but it certainly doesnt surprise me that it sold for $86k with the hype surronding Tauba. Im not sure we can read to much into 18 bids in 7 seconds as im aware of at least one absentee bid that was double the opening bid !
Im still slightly worried about the ultimate truth in these hammer prices for the work of Tauba.

I really like this work. I think it's a very strong piece. But ya, these prices are nuts. This thing sold for probably less than 4K in 2006. that kind of price trajectory is risky for long term stability.

For that kind of money and in that sorta realm, I would much prefer a moire exploration by Liz Deschenes or Carsten Nicolai.
But, strong result for an alright piece. I really am waiting for the 1st large, good fold to hit. You would have to figure November or so.

will certainly be interesting to see the first Fold go under the hammer , and be even more interesting to see what it could reach !!
I certainly agree at this stage this kind of price trajectory is risky !

i would doubt that we'd see a fold painting come up for auction so soon. would mean blacklist for any collector that put one up. But we will see.

here's some insight...meh. however, if i spent 80k and it looked like this.. www.phillipsdepury.com/xigen/lotimg.aspx?salenum=NY010112&lotnum=4..i'd be a little salt. but 80k is also around what it costs to fuel up his yacht, so it's a tradeoff i guess. def not the cleanest work. result to be expect. ridiculous roi as stated earlier. fuck equities, trade tauba.

ill never understand why someone with that much money would buy avg to sub par works by any artist. I really enjoy this particular series, but damn for $80k he could have bought so many shepard fairey prints.

The older works by TA may not be everyone's cup of tea. However, I really like the concept behind those older pieces. As for "binary lowercase", it's a brilliant piece that depicts alphabets in a 0 and 1 coding system. If you know a thing or two about binary code, you can decode this entire piece using the decoder here: www.roubaixinteractive.com/PlayGround/Binary_Conversion/Binary_To_Text.aspa white box is 0, a black box is 1, enter 8 digits at a time in the "binary to decode" textfield and see what alphabet comes out. Just a fun little exercise. Enjoy
