Sleep thank you so much for sharing. I just love James' art. My favorite would be top piece, the texture and the colors just takes it to another level for me.

Hey, guys - I have a problem that I was hoping that one of you might be able to help me with. My girlfriend is a huge James Jean fan, and her birthday is coming up in like a month... I was planning on getting her one of his $80 prints from his store but I just checked for the first time in a while, and the store is gone. Is there anywhere else where I could get some kind of James Jean artwork in the $100 or less price range? I've searched pretty hard already. And I think she already has all of his books so those won't work. Thanks!

Yeah, not too sure what happened with his store, but it's been down for weeks. You could pick up a show catalog off ebay for $100 (signed/numbered). Or this print here for $90. I like the print but it's not everyone's favorite. From 2010, it's limited, signed/numbered, and glows under a blacklight If she likes Imogen Heap, that's a plus.

you might try asking on the expressobeans forum. they deal with a lot more prints there. he puts out prints from his moleskin from time to time, and you might be able to snag one of those if the value hasn't gone up too much.

I think James took down the shop when he switched his sales over to OVM, and I guess he's done with selling "cheap" prints through his site. Maybe it doesn't hurt to just ask him, though...?

OVM had open editions as well, but OVM has been down for a while now too.

He obviously knew it would be published. Would love to know what's going on as well, but this doesn't make sense to me.

doesn't make for comfortable reading. kind of a bizarre interview though - as if the interviewer had his questions written down and had to ask them regardless of what jean said in the intervening answers. strange article for sure - thanks for sharing.

Perhaps he couldn't hold it all in anymore and thought making it public would be a sort of catharsis. Don't know why website is down though...

I am a James Jean fan and have owned original comic work by him. From the Levine show to now, I have not really appreciated his overall direction and the works being put out. Seemed inconsistent, somewhat strange, and lacking some of what had originally drawn me to his artwork. My personal ranking of him has gone down. This turmoil may be very much a factor in that and would explain a lot.

I agree, in no way did the interviewer even attempt to adapt to the responses given by the interviewee... It's a strange and sad story. But -1 to the juxtapoz interviewer, I think a second grader could have given a better interview. It might have been over email with no followup. Email questions. Get answers back. Published. I mean, imagine getting those responses, what could you do? Ask for more detail in followup questions? Not sure how I would have proceeded...

yes maybe it was done like that.
i've done interviews in the past like that via email, but have totally changed the dialogue of the original questions to respond to the content of the previous answer...
the interview is presented like a conversational interview at first.

The opening paragraph states "We spoke to Jean at his home in Los Angeles..." which leads me to believe it was in person. My only thought is that the interviewer, upon hearing the answers, continually tried getting back to the show and his art, rather than dwell on Jeans marital problems. It is an art magazine after all. The questions never really play off the previous answers, so its hard to say how the interview took place.

Somebody put that man on suicide watch.
Would be interesting to hear the other side of the story.

I found that interview particularly disturbing, the interviewer didn't seem to be interested in the answers merely following a script. Regardless James Jean is in a very unhealthy, unhappy place, the art has become irrelevant and almost the very thing that feeds his unfortunate situation. It sounds like he needs some concerted support and mediation to move forward, otherwise he could be gone as an artist forever.
