Just saw that Travis will be painting Nine Inch Nails for the Worlds on Fire: Grammy-Nominated Artist Exhibition, that is so amazing. I can't wait to see that.

Travis' work is being used for the upcoming Les Claypool album, "Of Fungi and Foe." Apparently Les will be performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday night (April 1st) and is planning on talking about Travis, so tune in.

Also, Travis, I saw the cover for the Art calendar magazine that is coming up, looks awesome as well, I will even have a small interview in that issue as well( I think it is that issue at least) , I just love that magazine and have been getting it for like over 10 years, way back when they only did a color issue like once a year and the other issues where all black and white. Also, I just want to say I absolutely love your framing on your pieces with the bubble glass, I can't even look at an old photo in one of those frames without thinking of your work. Very cool

"Miss Cynthia" Cynthia Smithson, of the Cobble Hill Smithsons, was the last heir to the Smithson family fortune. She also possessed the family's "bad hair," which was a problem in such a small, superstitious town. The townfolk mistook the "bad hair" for vampirism and formed angry, pitchfork-carrying mobs, who hunted down most of the family. It didn't help that her brother Eric Smithson was mildly insane, and spread the "bad hair" by biting people. Cynthia fled Cobble Hill to live with her cousins in Wales. When the "bad hair" uprisings began there as well, she left England for good in 1897. She took her "bad hair" to America and lived out her days in the city of New York. You can find Miss Cynthia in good company at Roq la Rue this weekend... Unless you'd rather join Travis at his solo show at Copro Gallery on Saturday.

Id like to thank everyone that came out to the shows this month here's a fun e-mail I got the other day: Dan Smith (www.seedanpaint.com) wrote: Mr. Louie, My 5th grade students studied your art and created monster portraits based on your paintings. They did sketches first and then developed the sketches into monochromatic paintings using black and white tempera paint. After they finished they wrote a biographical story about their paintings. I haven't had a chance to type up their stories yet, but they are fantastic! Here is a link their paintings! picasaweb.google.com/seedanpaint/TravisLouieInspiredMonsterPortraits?authkey=Gv1sRgCKHez6rohsXiwQE&feat=directlink

These are fifth grader paintings? They are a lot more advanced than my fifth grade class!
I've seen a lot less talent in group shows at galleries than this group. Let's give them a show.

This reminds me of a great charitable site where you can fund cool classroom projects such as this. Donorschoose.org. www.donorschoose.org I haven't funded any projects lately, but maybe I will this afternoon. There are some great teachers out there that could use the support! I've seen a lot less talent in group shows at galleries than this group. Let's give them a show. Amen!

Ron English just posted some lovely praise of Travis at Lost at E Minor: "I love monsters. I love old photographs. I love Travis Louie’s paintings. His masterfully refined technique allows him to take stunning portraits of the monsters in the recesses of his endless imagination. A beautiful balance of the grotesque and the comic, they are the perfect metaphor for the modern human. Once you acquire a taste for his product, you just keep wanting more and thankfully he keeps delivering his miniature masterpieces at an inhuman pace."

I really relate to the way Guillermo del Toro summed up his appreciation for Travis! ("Pan's Labyrinth" is one of my all-time favorite films by the way). “Meticulous, photo-realistic irreality. Dimensional daguerreotypes oozing through the wrong end of the looking glass. Respectable monstrosities in their best Sunday clothes. Travis Louie is the absolute master of his own askew domain. With impeccable technique and imagination he presents us with evidence from an impossible realm that has been, nevertheless, fully realized before its subjects pose for his lens/canvas. His genuine love of the bizarre infects each subject in this gallery of prim, prissy Misfits and Respectable Rogues.” -Guillermo del Toro jIm
