yeah. it would be odd to see a mcgee or usugrow garfield piece (although I'd be very curious). on slick's flickr he did post up his garfield piece: www.flickr.com/photos/ogslick/5205468593/ (his flickr won't let me make a direct post)
I will email them to see if I can dig up more info.
I would be interested to know who organise this. Hello Kitty, now Garfield. I noticed that for Sanrio's 50th anniversary, you had to get into ccontact with someone at rrockenterprises.com to get a preview for some of the works.

Is it the same? An article somewhere where the people doing it discuss the credibility and legitimacy (not of the brands like Garfield or Hello Kitty )?

Ruh-roh... Looks like someone's losing the monopoly on horrendous shtick themed group shows that diminish the reputations of otherwise talented artists!

WHile I do enjoy "some" of these themed group shows, I think that only a few can really fit into the theme. And some shouldn't even bother... their talents are just wasted.
Jemappellekat I agree while I am still very new to the art world I almost feel that alot of people in this show makes no sense as they are very established people seeing their work for the first time may be turned off. I am curious to see the McGee work and Frizzell

I was talking to Travis on the phone while he was working on his Garfield... I'm sure that these works will be well done, but seems a waste of time for artists that could be doing something really worthwhile with their time.... And Garfield? yuck. I guess there must be some fans out there, but I would think most of them are under 12 years old!

My first impulse was WTF?, too, but I really like the two pieces shown above. I did not like Garfield back in the 80s, but since discovering this site here I think that Jim Davis is genius (you don't see much Garfield in there ):
After reading Nate Frizzell's blog, my opinion has changed on this show somewhat and I have to admit I've always liked Garfield...Still I am of the mind that I would not like a piece that is so clearly Garfield. This is what stopped me from buying something from the Sanrio show. I don't know how to explain it, I'm just more keen on something that the artists I like have created rather than interpreted.
Oh, and jem, I could so imagine a Dennis the Menace group show

Naturally it was packed with about 75% of the "patrons" not really giving a sh!t about the art nor Jim Davis... But it was still the good time. If I had $1 for every person that claimed to be "homies" with either Bobby or Ben of TH, I would be able to get a piece from the show no problem... The prints sold out and costed a reasonable $40 at only 100pcs... They have a few different skate decks, t-shirts, caps, a mug, and stickers.
Still really thinking about Nate Frizzell's work, the more I look at the more I love it. I'd be interested to hear what fans of his think about this one.
CPK, I would consider myself a fan of Nates work. When I saw he was going to be in this show I was a little at odds with the piece before seeing it. I think Nate has a great deal of talent and and could not view his work in a theme show manner, for that part I would say the same about McGee as well. However after seeing the work I think he put an amazing spin on the work, I think it is a very strong work that could stand alone outside the theme Garfield show, I dont think people would even really think Garfield if this wasnt a theme show and it was hanging in LeBasse Projects last show.

i generally like nate's work a lot. personally, i dislike these theme shows so much though that i loose a little respect for the artists that take part in them, regardless of the art itself, which is usually poor in terms of content. although nate's piece looks well executed, i wouldn't be able to get past the fact that it was created for a garfield theme show (wtf?).
this sort of show only seems to happen in LA. i couldn't see something like this going down well in london. what do new yorkers think of these theme shows?
Sven I agree as well I am against theme shows especially for established artists I think we all would agree the work tends to hinder the artist having to work within a theme is like taking a portion of the creative control away from the artist. I also personally would say that if this work from Nate was hanging in a gallery show without the theme idea I personally cant see how anyone could say " this piece is Garfield" I think the piece is strong on its own and would agree the theme aspect takes away from it on some levels, but again if this was in a gallery with Nate showing non theme I dont think personally people would be able to figure out a theme of Garfield on it
