Looking for help from my fellow Artchivalists:
I'm having an art piece shipped to me from a gallery show in Italy. I'm working with the gallery to make arrangements using my personal FedEx account number.
Speaking with FedEx, I will only be insured up to $500 or something in the event of loss or damage of my piece, which is worth much more than that (enough to bother with insurance).
Does any one have the experience of insuring art during shipment separately from the shipper? If so, any carrier recommendations-- good coverage/good price?
I'm aware that you need to get some certification for export of art from Italy in particular, and I think (hope) at least the gallery is handling that in addition to the packaging and crating. Anything else you think I need to attend to. Any thoughts or advice welcomed!
Ugh, this is going to cost me an arm and a leg! At least I'm really, really excited to get the piece. I hope it's worth it!

Hey Weezy, sounds exciting man. Do you have a reason why you want to use FedEx specifically? I would imagine that the gallery can ship/insure and take care of paper work for you, no? And just as importantly, when do we get to find out what you acquired??

That seems strange to me that the gallery wouldn't have someone that they work with regularly. I've had two pieces shipped from Europe and both times the gallery took care of the arrangements. The first time I did have to pay a broker around $160 to clear the crate through customs. The second time it wasn't necessary. Why? I have no idea. Neither time were the paintings shipped with Fed Ex. As far as cost goes it was rather spendy. The last one I got a few years back and it was around $1200. And that's with the gallery splitting the shipping cost with me. Good luck!
