It's certainly a bold statement, however you personally interpret it. I have to imagine there would be some seriously mishandling of things to offend someone enough and warrant such actions. I will be interviewing him soon for AM. Perhaps I'll try and get the lowdown.

I suppose it's a little extreme but I guess it depends what the gallery did. I guess the fact that it was sold out didn't deter him.

yeah, a very bold statement, and you must dig into this walt with the interview. i'm looking forward to reading for sure.
i'm sure this news will elevate his status in the art world rather than harm it. the klf burned a million quid years ago as an art project / statement, and this still gets talked about a hell of a lot.
i think scott just burned his place into popular culture.

I think you're right Svenman, he just burned his way to the top. Thought about it a lot, even discussed this with some friends last night over dinner. Still we couldn't come up with a single good reason to warrant something as stupid and outlandish as this (short of a publicity stunt or a very expensive bet). Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Can't believe all the people on Jux patting this guy on the back for what he did....Already people are slighting the gallery and putting blame on them and this guy hasn't even given an explanation or made a public statement for his actions. If anyone reads a public statement by the artist in lieu of this please post.

interviewmagazine.com/blogs/art/2010-11-09/scott-campbell-vice-gallery/Excerpt but you should read the whole thing. BENNS: What were your concerns before going down? CAMPBELL: One of the main things was, they were going to get a sponsor for the show. I was really clear about my hesitance about having a corporate sponsor for an art show. They said it would be a little logo at the bottom of the invitation, tastefully done, they explained it as the way things worked in Mexico. I said, "OK, I'll trust you on this one, and take your word for it, just know I'm very cautious about this." BENNS: Art and advertising have very strict boundaries at the level of the commercial gallery. CAMPBELL: I got there and it was like, a full-on vodka commercial. Banners everywhere. On the invitation, the name of the company was at the top, printed larger than my name and the name of the show. I bit my tongue. I was really happy with everything we made for the show, and proud to show it [in Mexico]. Everybody showed up for the show and was very positive about it. The show sold out; they had never had a sold-out show before. I think their heart's in the right place, but I think when they started seeing dollar signs, I think when they started doing the accounting, they got a little bit ahead of themselves. The main guy I was dealing with started to get a little bit too pushy. All of a sudden took the position that I owed them. He kept bringing up, repeatedly, the dollar amount of the show. He kept talking about how they had made me money. But I could have made this work, and sold it out of my studio to my collectors, without giving them a cut, and saved myself the trip. I was there because I love Mexico City. I sent him an e-mail saying I wanted to keep things cool, and I thought he was being a little pushy and for us to just ride out the rest of the show. Essentially, I had some issues, and when I confronted him with these issues in what I felt was a productive way, he came back with a personal attack. Really childish name-calling. I can't work with that. If we're all focused on a common goal, then we're communicating, but as soon as somebody takes it to a competition of egos... I'm not going to entertain that. BENNS: So it was the insults? CAMPBELL: I decided I was done. If he's going to wave this dollar amount in front of my face, then fine: No one makes any money.

That definitely puts things into perspective. Though I still don't agree with the way he dealt with the situation, I can sympathize with it a little better. I'm happy to hear that he is still honoring his clients, though making all new work is a kick in the pants. I think it's safe to say that a lot of this could have been avoided with a bit more research on his part. He is worried about the representation of his work and himself yet he put both in the hands of a gallery he didn't know much about. Just googling the gallery for the past 10 minutes I can already see the intrusiveness of their adds and how they use sponsors. As for being a judge of character, that can be difficult because most people look for the best in others. I wonder if the gallery will make a statement or recount the events to share things from their perspective. All-in-all I'm sure Scott learned a lesson about who to trust his art with and although he has to remake a bunch of work he has sure received some publicity. Thanks for posting Sleepboy.

Working on a new technique for his next show? To answer myself it looks like these gunpowder works will be in his next show in Zurich ( showthread).

Props to Scott. Gmurzynska def seems like no joke. Some pretty impressive company by the looks of their insane artist list. Look forward to seeing what the new series offer.

Can't wait to see his new stuff. Been looking to add a money piece to my collection for some time now. From what I've been told, Scott's not going to be making them much longer.
