Can anyone recommend some resources (books, probably) to learn about Stella's work and its context? I can stare at the geometric pieces and enjoy them on a simple level but I find the later work quite tricky. From people who know better, I get the feeling that those later works form important context for some of the younger artists today (Parker Ito?) so I'd like to get a better grip...

You can get a decent "tip of the iceberg" amount of info from the book that covers his retrospective. You'll see the progression of his work all in the realm of abstraction. Yet if you really want to go deeper into his thought process, check out Working Space, self authored. he dissects classical paintings, I remember specifically there was an in depth analysis on Caravaggio's David. Good luck and I would say check with your library first then decide if you want to keep it around.

This was my book approach to Stella. Not recommending this order, but all added to my appreciation.
Frank Stella: 1958 Frank Stella: MoMA retrospective 1970 Frank Stella: MoMA retrospective 1987 Frank Stella: Paintings 1958-1965(AMAZING!) Frank Stella: Retrospective 2012 Frank Stella: Black, Aluminum, Copper
and you have to watch 'Painters Painting'.
Looking to add 'Connections', 'Irregular Polygons 1965-66', and 'Working Space' to my collection.
