For any foodies who especially love sushi, you gotta check Jiro Dreams of Sushi. "This delectable documentary profiles sushi chef Jiro Ono, an 85-year-old master whose 10-seat, $300-a-plate restaurant is legendary among Tokyo foodies. Ono is also a father, whose sons struggle to live up to his legacy and make their own marks." Available on Netflix streaming. Great find. Loved it so much have had to pause halfway through and head out for some whitefish with dried miso...... I kid you not

Jiro was truly a great one, on my travels this week watched One Elephant which is about a circus elephant who the owner has trouble placing her in a wildlife reserve. Really a great doc. not long about 88 minutes.

I dont think anyone recommended Rape Of Europa yet, and since we're art lovers here, Im sure you're gonna enjoy this one: The story of Nazi Germany's plundering of Europe's great works of art during World War II and Allied efforts to minimize the damage.

on the subject of the talent of louis theroux
when louis met jimmy savile - might be worthy of a viewing for those of you who nothing about the media/social storm going on the uk atm.
for those of you in the uk.. how could you have missed this ?
the man's name is soon to be removed from history.. something which doesn't happen too often.
not the for all .. btw.
louis is one those folks who can do... no wrong... he is both funny, serious and very well aware of what he is doing.

Great taste dotdot watched that one earlier today, I also watched Louis Theroux special on Mike Metzger ( I think thats the spelling it was on Nazi's ) I think theroux gentle and innocence approach makes the people he is filming ( when not Mike Metzger as he and the group in the Nazi documentary appeared to be more on the defense about their beliefs and not honest or educated in their opinions meaning they were unable to back any of their beliefs up with educated discussion not that i think there could be educated discussion for this issue ) feel more comfortable and open up to him then other documentary filmers

For everyone who watched "Young Beautiful Minds" about the 2006 British IMO team, there is a documentary about the American team made that same year by public television here in the US. It's called "Hard Problems" and can be found here: And this is the website for the film: www.hardproblemsmovie.com/

The American team doesn't appear to be quite as interesting a cast of characters as the Brits. But still an interesting watch.
Funny, when I was a kid growing up in Connecticut in the late 80's I took part in this contest and passed a couple levels - making it to the final few thousand kids in the U.S. From there they take it down to like the top 12 kids, which I didn't make (dont think i was even close to be honest), but I looked this morning and found one of the badges I was given that my mom had saved. I had mentioned my participation to my wife as we watched the docs and she didn't believe me, but then I dug out the badge and she laughed hysterically and called me a mathlete! It's funny, I had forgotten all about it until I watched the docs. Part of my youth reclaimed!

Just watched The Other F Word. Awesome flick. Punk Rockers becoming part of a system they have always been against. The establishment! They are parents and kids are now their top priority. Really a great way to kill about 2 hours.

I am so excited to see this film. I have convinced Sony to release it in Maine too. They were reluctant but I wasn't going to stop asking them until they did. Granted, it isn't until March but that's better then nothing. My netflix recomendations The Art of the Steal Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry Eames Happy People Mitt

I would also rec. on netflix Strongman , truly both hard to watch and can't shut it off. About a man who essentially performs ( very little ) at bending steel. I agree that sentence does not make anyone isn to rush out but I think my documentary picks are good so please give it a chance not based on my horrible post...
