David Shrigley is going to be drawing on people this weekend at 'The social' in London with the intention of if they are happy enough with the outcome, having it tattoo'd on them permenantly (although there is obviously no obligation). Contact him if you want to book a time to be drawn on He previously did this at Frieze.. www.davidshrigley.com/tattoos/tattoos.htm

I went to the Shrigley tattoo event today at The Social not really knowing what to expect. It turned into quite a surreal afternoon! When it came to my turn he sat me down and asked if I had any ideas about what I wanted. I told him that I needed some kind of good luck charm as I'm going through a lot of changes in my life. I explained how, after 11 years in the same job, I had finally decided to jack it in and throw myself into the unknown without a new job to go to. To be honest I've been on an emotional roller coaster lately, lurching from excitement to absolute fear, so this seemed like the perfect brief. He agreed. We decided to do it on my shoulder so he sat me down and started to give it some thought. After a few minutes he suggested that it should be text based and really positive. He gave it some more thought and then got to work. When he finished he took a photograph so I could see it. Well, wow, you can't get much more positive and all encompassing than that, particularly in Shrigley speak. A very warm positive feeling came over me. I was chuffed. Then he asked to let him do the other shoulder. I switched my shirt over and again he got to work. A photograph later and I could see the complete message. Given how I have been feeling, I can't tell you how perfectly he captured the moment. It really felt like an incredibly profound and special thing. It made me feel like I could do anything. I immediately knew that I needed to make it permanent. So I thanked him and headed down to the tattoo shops of Soho thinking I needed to do this before I changed my mind, while I still had this incredibly positive buzz. I also concluded that the journey I am about to embark upon is going to take me out of my comfort zone on a lot of different levels and this seemed like the perfect place to start. I found a tattoo parlor that could fit me in almost immediately and we just got on with it. Some slightly icky photos here... After completing the tattoos I went back to the Social as I didn't have enough money earlier to buy a signed book. I told David that I had had them done and he looked genuinely shocked and said I was a complete nutter. He said that, as far as he knew, I was the first person to leave one of these sessions and go straight to the tattooist and it was certainly the first time he had had the chance to see one in person so he insisted I take my shirt off for a proper look. He was made up but clearly very bemused as well. He signed my book with a personalised message and we said our goodbyes having shared a bit of an experience together I felt. All in all I couldn't be happier. It was a once in a lifetime experience and I now have the tattoos that I never dared have as I could never think of anything personal enough that would resonate with me beyond just being a nice picture. Have I made a rash decision? It certainly doesn't feel like that now but ask me again in a year's time. I'll post some new photos when they've healed in a couple of weeks.

Have I made a rash decision? It certainly doesn't feel like that now but ask me again in a year's time. When I first saw that Shrigley was doing this i thought it was a great idea - I can't think of another artist whose work would be more suited to tattooing than Shrigleys. Simple, and if the messages are meaningful for you i think making them permanent is a great idea. Nice one.

poignant story afroken.
it's always better (having the choice / power / confidence ) to make your own decisions than having others make them for you ..
aka rather jump than be pushed
David Shrigley - certainly knows a joke or two and a "level" headedness which comes with the above.
