Jonas Lofgren with Double Parlour Lost and Found and Yearnville
with special guest Luke Chueh
Opening night Thursday July 5, 2012 6pm - 10pm
Show on view through Thursday July 26, 2012
Spoke Art Gallery is proud to present Swedish artist Jonas Lofgren in Lost and Found accompanied by local husband and wife duo, Doubleparlour in Yearnville as our monthly exhibit for July. As an added bonus, we will also be featuring Los Angeles-based artist Luke Chueh in our back room for an exclusive book signing, print release and sketch show.
Jonas Lofgren uses the simplicity of pencil on paper to deftly create dreamlike, somber and haunting images. He approaches these drawings in a collage-like way, abandoned houses and warped perspectives, old forests, bare trees, abstract geometric shapes, animals and solitary pale human figures comes together to form fragments of a bigger story. Lofgren notes. The drawings show glimpses of a scene, there is a sense that something is going on under the surface and that the figures are heading for an uncertain destination.
Lofgren has chronicled a unique creation in an imaginary world filled with an air of foreboding and mystery, the plight of his characters is emphasized with an eerily whimsical and childlike charm. In Lofgrens words, I think of my work as a continuum, an ongoing narrative that tend to explore various aspects of silence and solitude in a world which is increasingly loud.
Showing along side Jonas Lofgren is the talented duo, Doubleparlour. This couple has created a new body of work titled Yearnville featuring hand formed resin sculptures that interact with each other in ways that are sometimes aloof and sometimes engrossed. Yearnville is an imaginary place bound by unrestraint, sympathy and distemper. The characters wish to be both found and to escape. Doubleparlours work includes solo and collaborative pieces in a variety of mediums and materials. They strive to produce well-crafted artwork with an emphasis on peculiar, humorous and melancholy characters.
Lastly, we are very excited to have Luke Chueh in the gallery to sign his newly released book, The Art Of Luke Chueh - Bearing The Unbearable. Additionally there will be a limited edition print release as well as a small selection of sketches available.
All artists will be in attendance.
