Two hot young artists. With a similar approach? Would love to discuss the works of these two. What do you think? Not to be mean, but if you really want to start a discussion on artists, why not post a few pictures of their artwork and tell us what YOU think of them? You start one thread after another without really giving us any information. I am sure fresh blood is always welcome on the board (artists and collectors alike), and I have experienced people here to be friendly, interested and always open to discussion, but please don't just throw a few names around and expect something to happen.

I actually don't find their approaches that similar, though admit the results are in some cases.
I see Otero more as a John Chamberlain style collagist. Sullivan, on the other hand, is more in the lineage of Rudolf Stingel and I was not surprised at all when Roberta Smith mentioned Stingel in her review of Sullivan's show at Maccarone.
Though, as will happen with all abstraction of the next 30 years, both can easily be compared to various aspects of Richter.

Mose makes a good point. Sullivan's work def similar to Stingel's work. I guess the real conversation becomes what does Sullivan or any of these other newer artist making homage to older styles bring to the table that enhances the history of things in an effort to make it their own. I think that is really the question at hand. Are some of the artists of our time adding some sort of commentary to their work that has not been viewed or discussed in the past?

Mose, I am really surprised how similar Sullivan´s work is to these early Stingels. And I think what rizza79 writes is the right question: Is Sullivan creating anything new by referring to other artist´s work? Difficult to say at this point, isn´t it? The works I have seen so far by Sullivan are all of the same series. All very Stingel-alike. There is not much variation. Like if Kassay would only make Silver Paintings. Future will show, I guess.
