Time for the 2012 review. Here is last year's thread for reference - 2011. And 2008, 2009 and 2010 editions if you're curious. As usual, the format is: 1. Post pictures of your top 3 acquisitions this year. 2. Best experiences? 3. Biggest disappointments? 4. Who are your rising stars? 5. Best show of the year?

Guess I'll start things off. 1. One of my favorite acquisitions in 2012. 2. Best experiences? Had a great time traveling to some shows this year including Art Basel and POW WOW Hawaii. Met some great forum members and artists and hope to continue in 2013. Also had fun curating a show - City of Fire. 3. Biggest disappointments? Almost purchased a dream piece but at the last second, price became too high. 4. Who are your rising stars? Not necessarily unknowns but artists I hadn't paid attention to before but now am interested - Fulvio di Piazza and Nicola Verlato, 5. Best show of the year? I'll cheat name a few although I'm sure I have forgotten some. The Jeff Soto & Audrey Kawasaki combo at Jonathan LeVine was nice. Josh Keyes showing at the University of Arizona - I enjoyed the mix of old and new work. I thought the Jeremy Geddes show at Jonathan LeVine was pretty nice, rare when one is able to do so well when so hyped up. Jen Stark's show at Martha Otero was pretty special. Couldn't make the show but the Yayoi Kusama retrospective at The Whitney Museum was pretty cool. I liked the Cai Guo-Qiang series of events and shows at the MOCA.

1. Post pictures of your top 3 acquisitions this year. Andrew Hem "Protect Ya Neck" Dabs Myla "The Dabs Myla Variety Hour" Edwin Ushiro "The Golden Hour" 2. Best experiences? Working with my dear friend Andrew Hem to make his first book, Dreams Towards Reality, a reality. Seeing the amazing reception he got at the Nucleus booksigning. A lovely experience working with the very generous Mark Ryden on the essay for his upcoming book, The Gay '90s. Seeing a few of my pieces packed up for loans to museums, and loaning two of my Andrew Hems to the U.S. Embassy in Cambodia. Co-curating the endangered species benefit "Wild at Heart" with Andrew Hosner at Thinkspace. (Somewhat) non-art related, but taking up muay thai on a whim one day, and becoming completely addicted to bringing the pain. 3. Biggest disappointments? This year has been relatively disappointment-free. 4. Who are your rising stars? Sean Chao, Ako Castuera, Kikyz 1313. 5. Best show of the year? Os Gemeos at Prism.

1. Post pictures of your top 3 acquisitions this year. 1. Revok - Unite and take over. Title taken from The Smiths REVOK2 by customcourage, on Flickr 2. Ekundayo - Symbiotic (from the Wild at Heart Thinkspace show) The work looks like my father. I keep it right outside my room so I see him every day. Ekundayo by customcourage, on Flickr 3. Pixel Pancho - Commission This is a family portrair of sorts. He was a bit generous on my lack of rubenesque physique in his rendition of me. The copper plate whill continue to age (save for the painter part which is sealed) So I am curious to see the piece evolve. 550512_10151215355153785_1115033020_n by customcourage, on Flickr 2. Best experiences? Man this is hard, its been a really good year, I would saw the art trips I've taken with my father and my family have been great. G40 in Virginia with my dad, Boston / NY with my family and Basel with my mother and step father were all fantastic. 3. Biggest disappointments? I have a knack for getting the day / times wrong on timed print releases. I've missed every one this year and its a bit comical at this point. 4. Who are your rising stars? Juan Travieso - Juan is part of the 4 guys from The Flagler Street Art Space that I collect. Juan seems to be getting some press lately which is a pleasure to see. 560860_10151208913328785_1159282577_n by customcourage, on Flickr 5. Best show of the year? This is impossible Yayoi Kusama @ The Whitney - Few times have I left an exhibit feeling that I intimately understand what the artist experiences and was so curious about understanding more. I cant say that the work is something I would personally collect, but the experience was second to none. Os Gemeos @ ICA Boston - I've only seeing one or two of their gallery works up close till this exhibit. Having seen so little street / post graffiti / whatever in a museum setting this was a real treat.

1 . Post pictures of your top 3 acquisitions this year.Lifted, Thunder & Shedding - by Josh Keyes. I had been on the lookout since they were first released (and i missed all three) and really happy to have them in my collection and ready to be framed. 2. Best experiences?Had some great opportunities to see some art shows come through the local state art gallery and also being able to see some great up and coming local artists and their work. I am interested to see where some of them end up. 3. Biggest disappointments? No major disappointments. I did miss a few releases but that's the way it works. I also had a decent shot and a long term ISO original that i had been hunting for ages but it fell through. oh well. my turn will come. 4. Who are your rising starsAs Origo said - i think Martin Wittfooth is one to look out for. I also think that Brin Levinson is set for some big things. 5. Best show of the year?Local art shows mentioned above in #2

Top 3 acquisitions this year: Tauba Auerbach "Plate Distortion 2" (Un-packed at framer and haven't shot personal images yet) Shawn Huckins (Commission) "Wink" I had this slogan from the 1968 student riots in France "Sous Les Pavés La Plage" the un-literal meaning being (Under the oppressive rules of civilisation lies freedom) custom made. I had the neon maker create the phrase as close to the graffitied reference below from 1968. Best experiences:Terry Richardson's "Terrywood" exhibition at Oh-Wow Gallery Stanley Kubrick show at LACMA Drinks and conversation with Futura during his Hennessy bottle release party in LA. Biggest disappointments?Missing Art Basel Who are your rising stars?Shawn Huckins, Camraface, Louis Eisner, Dust La Rock, Lucien Smith, Best show of the year?George Condo at Prism Gallery in West Hollywood

1. Post pictures of your top 3 acquisitions this year. No surprises to most people here: Kaws Aurel Schmidt Sam Falls (this piece has a unique quality in that it gets better everyday that I look at it) And an honorary mention to this Sam Falls too, which is on a par with the one above.... 2. Best experiences? For the first time I took the week off for Frieze and immersed myself in it, and the satellite fairs, pretty much every hour of every day. Having that luxury of time to really get to know such a broad range of contemporary art and spend time with so many interesting people was truly a privilege and really cemented my desire to focus on emerging artists in my collecting. 3. Biggest disappointments? Not making it to Miami again. It's just not going to happen in December. Can it be moved please? Not having $30k lying around to take advantage of a once in a lifetime opportunity to buy a dream piece which was extremely well priced and of exceptional quality. As always, there were a couple of sour gallery experiences, but nothing I haven't come to expect. 4. Who are your rising stars? Sam Falls is top of my list by far followed by, in no particular order, Louis Eisner, Nick Darmstaedter, Lucien Smith, Daniel Turner, Michael Hilsman 5. Best show of the year? Without a doubt Kasuma at Tate Modern. It made much of the Hirst show across the corridor look contrived and tired. I thought it was an interesting move by the Tate to show them in parallel.

Love the KAWS and Falls x 2. I don't get the appeal of the Aurel though. Congrats on all of them regardless.

As usual, the format is: 1. Post pictures of your top 3 acquisitions this year. Sorry for the bad photography, trying to avoid glare on some of these. That Craww painting was my favorite from the show he did at C.A.V.E. gallery and I'm very happy I was able to get it. The buying experience from CAVE was amazing too and I'd happily buy from them again any time. I really need to get it reframed at some point. Color came out way too orangey on that picture, probably some reflection from the brown wall but I love this Melissa Campa painting I was able to commission this year as well. She put a ton of time into getting this painting just right and I appreciate it a lot, I'd love to get another one done from her some time. I'm not sure if I received this right at the end of 2011 or the beginning of 2012. I've only been collecting for a little over a year but this was one of the first images I saw that I really liked and kept coming back to over and over. I spent a lot of time tracking down a copy of this print and I'm still happy to have it. 2. Best experiences? Best experience was probably just being exposed to so many great artists over the last year and getting a better feeling for the type of art I enjoy. The commission process on the Campa painting was also something I enjoyed a lot. 3. Biggest disappointments? 4. Who are your rising stars? There is probably no one less qualified than me to comment on this but one of the artists that doesn't seem to get talked about much is Craww, I really like a lot of his work they have that darker ethereal feel about them. He's been taking his recent paintings in a new direction lately which is nice. Taka Sudo I don't think I've seen mentioned on this board before. He's a Canadian artist. This normally isn't my thing but I like the way he combines newsprint into his works, I'd very much like to pick up something of his over this coming year. That's just a couple of his, definitely worth checking out more. 5. Best show of the year? Geddes show in NYC, just wish I could have seen it in person.

1. Post pictures of your top 3 acquisitions this year. Couple that have to remain under wraps but these three have given me immense pleasure. Two which have been part of a concerted effort to diversify my collection a little and broaden my horizon. Marcus Harvey - "Pigmask" (Oil on canvas - 76cm x 76cm) Harland Miller - "This is where its fucking at" (Watercolour, gouache and pencil on paper - 121cm x 76cm) Conor Harrington - "Breastplate" (Oil & Aerosol on paper - 70cm x 50cm) 2. Best experiences?Sadly I do not get much opportunity being based in Ireland and with work commitments to see many of the spectacular shows from across the globe but it was fantastic to see the Shep show at Stolen Space and meet up with a very humble and grounded Shepard Fairey. This one would have been in my top three any other year and I was very fortunate and lucky to add it to my Shep collection!!! 3. Biggest disappointments?Being promised a KAWS work from primary only to be let down at the last minute. It happens and I fully understand when galleries underestimate the popularity of artists and the need to satisfy their established customer base but in my world your word is your word. It forced me back once more into the secondary market and I was extremely happy to add this KAWS pastel drawing this year. 4. Who are your rising stars?I am constantly exposed by the immense knowledge of the members of this forum who are in a far better position to answer this question than me. I certainly admire the work of Aurel Schmidt, Lucien Smith, Scott Campbell, Sam Falls and Mark Flood but that is probably more a wish list than any form of prediction. I do think that Conor Harrington is incredibly talented and has the world at his feet. 5. Best show of the year?Barry McGee @ UC- Berkeley Art Museum Just poetic IMO.

Sorry like Victor I am going to add a 4th acquisition. Primarily as I actually thought this one was bought in Y2011 but also because it is a piece I smile at every time I walk past every day in life without fail. Its where it began for me.

It's not like three is the law, just a suggestion to keep some structure and to be honest that just what the first person wrote five years ago.

Sorry, old fella. Just reading the way the op was, it said 3 additions from last year. You posted five, then you added the Banksy which you said was a 2011 addition... Edit - Sleeboy, don't be a bitch, eh? You understood my post...

Edit - Sleeboy, don't be a bitch, eh? You understood my post... I think I pretty much understood your post. You don't like Harveyn. Why should anyone on here care about your personal feelings about him or be subjected to you picking a fight? This thread and the forum in general is about discussing art and sharing - how are you contributing to that and what motivates you to police a friendly topic such as this? I chose more than one favorite show and only posted one acquisition and am not the only one to deviate and won't be the last one to deviate from the guidelines... And you didn't get upset about that enough to bring it up.

I am pretty sure I said I thought it was a 2011 but was actually a 2012 addition and hence an afterthought. But as a point of clarity and just in case you really wanted to know it was bought in Y2012. Happy New Year to you Pauly as well.... Killed the moment but sure at least I know you by now...
