So for christmas the parents decided to grace me and the wife with two vacations one within the US and one outside ( they did this as they felt planning a vacation outside the US would take some time and one within the US could be done fairly easy ) so tonight we were kicking ideas around, she does not have a huge love of art like myself, nor do I have a huge love of the beach ( even living in South Florida I got enough of sand ) so we have come to a few decisions #1. play vacation roulette and pick a time and not book the trip until a day or two before and just see whats around on travelocity or what have you #2. (my idea) get ideas from my internet friends (she doesnt think you guys are my friends but she reads books a lot) and #3. go back to NYC for 7 days (which we love but trying to open new doors in the world as she has not done alot of traveling unlike me who use to travel all the time for work ).
So my friends any ideas, have you been somewhere and had a blast, have you been somewhere and it sucked royally any help. As far as the out of country trip that one is all her ( I think scotland or somewhere she said )

New Orleans - Good food, good music, interesting culture, gambling, art.
Colorado (Colorado Springs, Manitou, Denver, Boulder) 3 cool areas, close enough to travel to easily. Great hiking, good food, decent art in Denver.
Sante Fe, Albequeque(sp) - Great area, great food, interesting culture. No art experience there. A trip south (3 -4 hours I think) to Alamagordo will be the best experience your camera has ever had. You could actually do the Colorado trip into this trip. You would be able to hit up Great Sand Dunes National Park (which is the second best experience your camera will ever have)
Vermont (Brattlboro) - Nice downtown, cool day trips, great antique finds. Geat history.
If any of these aren't interesting, let me know, I've got 10 or so more.

Burlington, VT - (Brattlboro is nice for a day trip but, you'll run out of things to do quickly, imo). Great hiking, skiing, mountain biking, awesome restaurants, great beers (3 Needs), very good music scene (Higher Ground / Flynn Theater), Lake Champlain (not a beach but, a large enough body of water where she won't feel land-locked), a couple of galleries, Church Street, etc., leaf peeping, so on and so forth.

Wine country - Napa Valley and Sonoma County are close to each other, though I'm not sure what the best time to go for that stuff is. Some cliffside hotel/resorts around there too and it's few hours away from Tahoe (ski, snowboarding) and Reno (casinos, etc). Also a few national parks in that area. SF is also closeby if you're into the whole touristy thing.
Portland -> Seattle -> Vancouver NY -> Niagara Falls -> Toronto
Don't know too much about those cities though.
