Printed Matter fundraising edition: printedmatter.org/events/205Unfortunately I won't be at the fair (or know anyone who will be there), so I have pretty much zero chance getting one of these.

After letting people inside the NADA fair there was a mad dash to the Printed Matter booth to buy one of the few remaining Israel Lund prints. Most were already pre-sold to dealers at the fair. I think maybe 15 at most were for sale. I've posted some additional photos taken at the fair to my instagram.

Did you get one? whats the IG name? Yes, managed to get one. Did you get one too? There seemed to be some forum names/faces I recognize from their IG pics. Will have to say hi next time. Did you buy anything else at the fair? IG: @wimbledongreen

This does NOT sound like an art bubble at all!? Contemporary art flipping at its best. I will be very surprised if we don't see several of these popping up on ebay, paddle8 or here for 10 x of the price. Stefan Simchowitz will be proud!

It does remind one of urban art print releases back in in 2006-2008 era.
But then again, who doesn't like free money? Seriously. I don't care if it is Israel Lund prints priced at $400 that can get $4k will a little effort, some limited Nike release that will instantly sell for 10x on Ebay, or even Black Friday rushes at big box retailers.
You price things well below market price, you attract resellers. Its just a commodity at that point.
Personally, I disagree with this being seen as any sort of indication of an art bubble. Prints are the lowest rung of the ladder, while the market is made well, well above. This sale is so small as to be insignificant.

I agreed with your perspective towards flipping. That's unavoidable, unfortunately. What's worrisome is how frequent, speculative and extensive it is these days. In Israel Lund's case, his 44 x 36 painting retailed at $7500 back in 2013. A relatively subdued piece is now asking for $80 - 120 K (with a bid of $75 K). That will be a Profit of 967% in one year with multiple pieces waiting in the upcoming auctions. I am pretty certain that's on par with Murillo, Vaerslev, Scott-Douglas, Ostrowski, Ito and Smith, just to name a few. With all due respect, I disagree with your argument regarding the art bubble. Originals and prints target different tax-bracket markets (of course with exceptions). If you compare $4000 per edition to the inflated pricing on Lund's originals, it looks pretty cheap. I understand your point that the market will auto-adjust itself. I hope I am wrong. But yet again, how many of these artists can take a hit when their high-flying prices come crashing down like Anselm Ryele or Tim Eitel (maybe not applicable to the print market).

The bubble is the reason that people stormed nada at 10 am on a friday. No artist of Lund's stature has a print market, his only exists because of the bubble. Nobody would care about this print if there weren't for the bubble. Sure there are different players involved in the lower and higher end of the bubble but it is indeed the same bubble that they're floating in. Yet I wouldn't predict the bubble will crash, a lot of people with money have vested interest in keeping this (and all the) bubble(s) afloat. But certainly the market is completely crazy. If you ask me, you'd be better off (and actually pay less by) buying an original Daniel Buren instead of a Lund knock off. www.phillips.com/detail/DANIEL-BUREN/UK010513/159?fromSearch=daniel%20buren&searchPage=1www.artspace.com/daniel_buren

I read an article recently that mentioned how one of the hedge fund hotties got tired of his work being considered a joke and just a vehicle to make money by speculators and so he/she stopped making work to spite them. It didn't give the name of the artist. I was hoping it was this guy. Oh well, wonder which one it was.

That is lovely. I've really come around recently on several artists that I didn't like at first, Lund being one. I must say, he is a great guy as well and I wish him continued success.
