yeah, been down for a few months now, would be a real shame if it doesn't return. know i've got a huge order planned for the second it does, imagine many others do too. you can get a vague idea of the situation by looking through jen bekman's twitter

Thanks for sharing the article! While I never went the print route I have a lot of friends who regularly buy from that site...or did.

Oh man, 15 million in revenue and hadn't made profit yet? Yikes! I don't know Jen or her staff personally, but when your offices are a full floor suite in Soho, and when they're outsourcing all production to third parties, seems like they were more on a spending spree than intelligent investment/growth, in my opinion of course. Seeing any arts site go out of business is always a shame, I wonder if they'll actually come back or not?

I would look to their publishing arm for insight. They appear to be learning from their mistakes in that area and applying them here. For example, I read that they have been signing some decent authors up but have been unable to get much (any?) of the author's work on the best seller list due to the lack of physical store space and the continuing importance of that space in the market yet. Seems they may be taking a different approach here to gain some physical space via collaboration. I read an article in the nytimes within the last six months on this. Might be worth searching out.
But, buyer beware. Good luck.

I've been following the 20x200 story too. I think it's an issue of investors interests conflicting with the owners. At any rate, I found another site that I'm LOVE love loving that I think has better work for sale, and is much more curated. They sell fine art limited edition photographs by emerging artists and the prices are really affordable eyebuyart.com I subscribed to their newsletter and find the writing really smart and accessible.

did they owe a lot of people money / product when they went out of business with no reconciliation or refund undertaken in the intervening period?
