When I was down in tampa I really started to like the work of one of their local artist named Bask, he was new to me but not to many both on this board and around the world. I bought one of his pieces and was excited when he told me that he was doing a show in the NY/NJ area. He was really excited about this show and was telling me that he was hiring street teams to bomb the area, making amazing stencils and overall felt that he was working on some really personal and great pieces. I was excited! being a stubborn and an a$$hole New yorker I was moved to try and go see his show even if it was in Asbury Park NJ. The show was scheduled for that Saturday on Thursday I went to the Opera Gallery to see their New Blood show that had some real killer works by some of our board favorites, Brandt Peters, Kathy Olivas, Colin Christensen(SP), and many more. BTW Camilla D'errico had some stunning, pieces at the show that left me awestruck and also amazed at the detailing that she did for the piece(9,000 for a 12x24!!!!!!)..
Anyway at the show I ran into a very talented young artist who mentioned to me that the gallery bask was showing was crap and that they did a horrible job supporting shows. Over the past month I kept on checking on the gallery site and even called them twice about the show and could not get any info for it. Any and all info I got was from the artist myspace page!!! For whatever reason Sunday before I left to trek down to NJ I went online just to confirm the address on Bask myspace page and find this note attached:
I would first like to apologize to anyone that was making plans to attend and support my opening this Saturday at Crybaby Art Gallery. The last thing I wanted to do or thought I would EVER do, is pull the plug on a solo show the week of the event.
Unfortunately, I became aware of how under-promoted this event actually was and due to the shear size of the exhibit I had planned, I simply could not afford to make that sort of gamble. It's already a gamble enough being an artist during economic time like these. Whenever I prepare for an event, I give it 110%. From the conception of the work, to installing the show, to promoting it. All I ever expect is from whomever I do business with, is to match my energy and enthusiasm. To my dismay, I have become aware that this was not the case with this exhibit. Just visit the CrybabyArtGallery.com for starters and see if there is a single mention about my show. This, along with a few other disappointments, is unexceptable.
The reason for this blog is to give an explanation to why I canceled my exhibit. It is not meant to drag the galleries name through the mud. I wish nothing but success for them in the future but I hope, that through this collective loss, a lesson is learned.
Thank you for understanding,
Bask
I would also like to add one more thing. To whomever, was part of the street team for this show, I will still honor my word and compensate you for your support.
