I've been following these since he started doing it on Instagram. I saw the show in NY. I've really done my best to be open minded about this. I'm failing. And I generally get his work and love it. The nurses are moving. I dig the jokes and the Cowboys and the bikers, even some of the body parts. His appropriation play is provoking and thoughtful and even fun, at least to me. What leaves me uninspired with this is what he's aping and how. When he plays with advertising, that imagery of the Marlboro Man for example is pervasive, universal and so unconscious. This Instagram stuff is personal and small minded, at least to me. He's not saying anything. He's pretty much trolling. Yeah sure, nightcoregirl is now an Instagram celebrity but it's a simalcrum. It's parroting back and forth as infinitum. I get its commentary on today, but if I want to be entertained by Instagram, I'll just keep following mark grotjahn. Sorry.

I made it out finally. I found it soothing. Nice vibe. Dug the democratization of high art meets the universality, anyone can do it- ness of Ross. I wanted to melt into the large scale canvases. Reminded me of the Colen Disney inspired work, in both style and spirit. Also a bit of ironic but cloying Sturtevant.

Anyone make it out to the new Still House space? How was the work in person? Large scale Bob Ross inspired high brow/ low brow from what I can tell with corresponding smaller pieces donated around town in inconspicuous locations and a book about the process. Sounds interesting in an aesthetic but process based way.

I heard he outsources all of his production. Anyone know? Like Hirst, Koons and Flood? Seriously though, how so? Assistants doing more than assisting? I'm curious as there does seem to be a throughline between the swings and these, technically and thematically.

Dug his work with Still House, the Duck Test series didn't quite do it for me but was very impressed with the current Manhattan Beach show at Malborough Chelsea. Evocative, full and transportive. Reminds me of Alex Katz in a wistful way.
