1. Post pictures of your top 3 acquisitions this year. Matthew Palladino Tim Barber Ryan McGinness 2. Best experiences? The two day event that was Tauba Auerbach's opening at Bergen Kunsthal. Immersing ourselves in her world was hugely invigorating. 3. Biggest disappointments? A commission that I ordered in May 2010 and was supposed to take 12 to 18 months is showing no signs of arriving any time soon. I can't see it coming for at least another 6 months, which will have meant a 2 year wait! Getting to the end of 2011 without has been a big disappointment but I'll continue to be patient. 4. Who are your rising stars? Lucien Freud. His work is obviously polarising but it does it for me. Apart from that I think Paul Wackers is due some recognition. 5. Best show of the year? Without a doubt Tauba Auerbach at Bergen Kunsthal. Just sublime.

1. Post pictures of your top 3 acquisitions this year. Peeta - Courage photo by customcourage, on Flickr Reinier Gamboa - They Eye Brian Adam Douglas (Elbow Toe) - A Sort of Homecoming 2. Best experiences? Hanging out at The Guggenheim with Laura from Andrew Edlin for the Cattelan show. Art Basel 2011 3. Biggest disappointments? I "won" an El Mac in a charity auction and its condition was horrible and not disclosed to me. I had smaller issues with 2 of the 6 other pieces I won as well. My communications with the gallery sucked, it wasnt my finest moment or theirs. Other than that we learnt that we didnt want to rent space especially inside the same building as the landlord. 4. Who are your rising stars? ... i cant think of someone off the top of my head. 5. Best show of the year? The Underbelly @ Art Basel

1. Post pictures of your top 3 acquisitions this year. Difficult to choose. 3 that i'm quite excited about.... I went and bought this Matthew Palladino combo. Each is 37x48 inches. I was expecting 30x40 pieces, so they took a lot more space than expected. Matthew Palladino by Space1026, on Flickr The white piece kills. It's called '29 Ghosts', acrylic on cradled panel. This my favourite of the year. Matthew Palladino by Space1026, on Flickr Next one is by R.M. Phoenix, and is beautiful in so many ways. 'No Shock, Just Awe' Acrylic on Canvas 75x55cm The other is this untitled Alex Lukas piece. It's Ink, Acrylic and Gouache Silk Screen on Commercially Produced Poster 20.75” x 31″ 2. Best experiences? Hmmmn. 3. Biggest disappointments? Commercial things generally that distract the message. As a single biggest disappointment, the whole issue of censorship of Blu's mural at the MOCA show and the lack of fellow artists that actually spoke out and called it as most rational people saw it really pissed me off. 4. Who are your rising stars? Matthew Palladino is the most exciting artist on my radar at the moment. I think his popularity will grow significantly with his upcoming exhibition at Eli Ridgway Gallery. Otherwise, Paul Wackers has really impressed me with some great work this year (edit: he is very hit and miss for me though). Pete Watts, Russell Leng, Louis Reith, Ryan Wallace and Adam Normandin have also. 5. Best show of the year? From the shows i went to, i enjoyed the Kid Acne retrospective at Sheffield museum the most. arrestedmotion.com/2011/07/openings-kid-acne-kill-your-heroes-museums-sheffield-millenium-gallery/I missed a couple of shows i really wanted to go and see, but have had significantly less time to travelling around and checking out art shows this year. edit: also enjoyed barry mcgee @ stuart shave and brett amory @ outsiders, plus the bast show at lazarides newcastle.

i'm enjoying these posts. i'm a big matthew palladino fan, so it's great to see him getting so much attention here. love that 29 ghosts painting. i remember those paintings at his white walls show.
i'm also feeling the paul wackers energy. he's a slow burn, but continues to put out great works. he's got a show opening tomorrow night..(dec.16th) at morgan lehman in new york. great images online. wish i could see it in person.
1. Post pictures of your top 3 acquisitions this year.
no photos from me. i didn't acquire much this year, as i'm saving all the money i can for a new truck.
one thing i did get, that i love, is a sean mcfarland "dark photo" that i've had my eye on for a while. sean is amazing. like no other photographer i know. he's also an eli ridgway artist. eli has a good stable of artists right now.
oh...also i'm loving the tauba auerback pop-up book, [2,3]. it's huge, and amazing.
2. Best experiences?
had a great time at the artpadsf art fair. great people. good vibe.
3. Biggest disappointments?
having the tauba auerbach static photo edition sell out so fast. i found out about it the day it went live, and by the time i checked the site, they were gone. dust in the wind. my heart broke. i'm still feeling the pain.
4. Who are your rising stars?
rising stars.....paul wackers, matthew palladino, sean mcfarland, and the date farmers (i wish they got more attention) and for under the radar i'll go with ted gahl, evan nesbit, and devin troy strother.
5. Best show of the year?
the one that blew me away, and filled me with awe, was the date farmers show at the ace gallery in la. i've never seen so much work in one show. i think there were 10 or 11 rooms. it was like a museum show. i was there for hours. and they were using one of the rooms as a studio to create even more work. so it was great to find them painting there. love those guys.
from photos i've seen online, tauba's show at bergen kunsthall looks beautiful. i also enjoy the photos of the barry mcgee show at stuart shave modern art in london. both shows are really clean, and packed with great work.

1. Post pictures of your top 3 acquisitions this year. Well, this year the same as last, I could pick all three favorites from my Andrew Hems. I can't get enough of them, they move me so deeply. But I will confine myself to one for the sake of variety. This piece, "Oner," is a lonely tribute to one of his graff buddies who was deported and ended up living in Chile, isolated from family and friends by unforgiving laws and invisible borders. Rob Sato's "Giant Down." It's a little hard to see in this jpeg, but each of the wood fragments in this delicate piece, no matter how small, has formed into a human-shaped stick figure. It's extremely poignant, especially for someone like me who weeps when a favorite tree is cut down. It does feel like someone's been murdered sometimes. And just for fun, this little piece from Dabs Myla. Only those two could make a cock and boobs so happy and adorable. Honorable mention to Kelly Vivanco's " Resting," Tessar Lo's " Blue Reasons" and the wonderful sketch of fennec foxes that Chris Berens gave me. 2. Best experiences? Seeing Heroes & Villains finally published, and watching everyone turn out for the big book signing event Zero+ threw for us in September. Going to Amsterdam with Tessar for his triumphant solo at Jaski Gallery, and being shown an amazing time by everyone there. Getting to know the remarkable Robbert van Ham, director of Jaski Gallery, better than I ever thought possible. Hanging out with Chris Berens and visiting his gloriously cluttered studio. Being asked to collaborate with Chris Berens on his gorgeous monograph Mapping Infinity. Watching Andrew Hem paint his largest mural to date, a Cambodian family portrait on the walls of his hometown of Culver City. Being given the opportunity to write an essay for Mark Ryden's book Pinxit and also the cover article about him for the December Juxtapoz. Going to Art Basel in Miami for the first time, to attend Taschen's wonderful book release party for Mark Ryden. Watching Dabs, Myla, Witnes and Rime paint Wynwood red while I was there. Those guys are hard workers! Being given incredible interviews by Wayne White, David Jien, Dabs Myla, Tessar Lo, Andrew Hem, Kevin Titzer and many others. 3. Biggest disappointments? Not being able to spend as much time with my friends as I would have liked, because they were so damn busy painting! 4. Who are your rising stars? New people who've caught my eye this year.... can't really think of anyone. But Dabs Myla, Rob Sato and David Jien are still on the wing, the sky's the limit on those guys. 5. Best show of the year? I'll call this one a three-way tie... all of these were really magical, inspirational shows that went to the next level. Andrew Hem "Cold Water" at LeBasse Projects Dabs Myla "The Best of Times" at Thinkspace Kelly Vivanco "Springs to Mind" at Thinkspace

Giant Down is perhaps my favorite work of art I've seen this year. The composition really moves me. And the Andrew Hem piece is equally impressive and equally moving. I am humbled by these two acquisitions.

Sven your new direction is really inspiring to me. You seemed focused on more intellectual artists who've got a unique vision. Palladino especially-- and Shaw.
I like Paul Wackers, too. He seems to have the potential for evolving even further from where he is now. I'm putting him, Shaw and Palladino on my watch list for the right opportunity.

Post pictures of your top 3 acquisitions this year.
i. Annie Lapin, "A Wall Space for the Place Communion Space" (2011)
ii. Antony Micallef, "Head With Gold" (2011)
iii. Jinyoung Yu, "Disguise" (2010)
Runners up: Clayton Brothers, "Stain on Lemon Yellow," Esteban Schimpf, "LA Debris" and Bumblebee, "Don't Move"
Other than these I also acquired Annie Lapin, "A Brushed Scarlet Outside"
Images to come. I'm still waiting on all of my top 3 pieces to arrive even though I bought them much earlier in the year. The Lapin has to go to the framers, so it'll probably be February before I have those up to enjoy. Until that happens, I can't even think about art plans for 2012.
2. Best experiences?
Talking art with gallerists Beau Basse, Christine Le, Andrew Hosner, Seth Carmichael and Josh Liner and on this forum (including fellow Angeleno Commandax at all the great shows) and with other members. I've learned so much from all of you, and it's great to find people who share not only a passion for art, but also collecting.
3. Biggest disappointments?
Chasing after a Lapin the entire year. Not being able to get one at her Honor Fraser show or at a charity auction where I was armed with checkbook to go the limit only to get trumped by some guy who paid the buy it now price before I could. Grrr.
Succumbing to the fever of getting what you don't have and making an impatient rookie mistake of spending a decent chunk of change on a piece I personally don't think is the strongest example of the artist's recent work, even if potentially a good investment.
Having spent what for me was a lot on art while taking a bath in the market and having a misleading amount of free wall space to show for it.
4. Who are your rising stars?
"Who's on your list?" The artists I don't have but I'm really intrigued by at the moment are almost certainly way outside my price range-- except maybe a very small piece and if I'm willing to downgrade my other financial goals. But it's more exciting to find really talented artists who before they're propelled into the stratosphere. I've been very impressed by Shaw, Wackers and Palladino as people have posted here. Andrew Hem just keeps getting better, Michael Alvarez, Heiko Mueller and Dabs Myla remain in my sites if the right opportunity came along.
5. Best show of the year?
Hands down the Charming Baker show at Mercer-- he just nailed every single piece and that's extremely rare. It also felt evolutionary for him, which is what a great show should be.
Runners up:
-- Annie Lapin at Honor Fraser -- Jinyoung Yu and Andrew Hem's show at LeBasse. -- Angel Otero at Lehman Maupin. -- Beyond Eden at Barnsdale -- David Jien at Richard Heller -- Antony Micallef at Lazarides -- Cameron Gray, Birth of a Legend -- Zhang Huan at Blum & Poe -- Brett Armory at Anno Domini

Enjoying the thoughtful responses to this thread. Congrats on the Lapin, Weezy. I'm a huge fan. Do you have a link to a photo of your piece? I'm not familiar with that one.

Enjoying the thoughtful responses to this thread. Congrats on the Lapin, Weezy. I'm a huge fan. Do you have a link to a photo of your piece? I'm not familiar with that one. Oops. That is the piece I didn't want to jinx by talking about until it arrived, I chased it for so long. It's paid for and has been crated, the export forms are filled out and it's ready to be picked up at the gallery-- hopefully between Christmas and New Years, to arrive the first week of January. So I hope I'm safe, but I've wanted this so bad, and I'll remain anxious until it's signed for at my front door (although it's going to go right back out to the framers). I only have it as a pdf. So you'll have to wait with me for its arrival. I also want to post a digital that properly captures it-- it looks amazing in every shot, but different in two separate digitals I've seen so I really don't have a full sense of what the live impression will be. You may have seen I bought a smaller piece of hers earlier this year that I like and continues to grow on me, but don't yet love. This one... well I'm just so excited to have it as it's an excellent example of her talent and seems evolutionary-- it's a complete abstract unlike her earlier works, and of course like all her work somehow references distinct yet fleeting, but also deeply resonant, elements from classical art. As such, like her best work, it's simply magical: powerfully evocative in ways that defy description (and a great size, large but not oppressively huge). I'm moving Micallef's Idiot Love (where?) to put it over the mantle. Also can report my Micallef portrait finally shipped today, and should be arriving in the US before Christmas! It feels like it's coming together... Epicfai, where are your posted responses to the year end retrospective? You've got one of the most amazing collections on the forum, and I'm sure this past year was as epic as your avatar name. Merry Christmas and best wishes for the new year! Weezy

i love your lapin piece. really cannot wait to see whats coming next. i will need to pick your brain a bit about her market as she is someone ive been watching, albeit only from afar. i have yet to put together a year end review as ive been pretty busy lately. my major purchase of 2011 is a commission, but wont be seeing it until early in the new year. i'm nervously excited at this point in the game but trying to keep expectations in check. its been a year in the works so it seems hard to believe that it will arrive relatively soon. time to start considering future directions, something i always enjoy.

1. Post pictures of your top 3 acquisitions this year. Loved Space Shuttles as a kid so this was must 2. Best experiences? Hanging out with Chaz and Bob (The London Police) in Amsterdam before their Opera Gallery show. Two of the nicest, most accomodating guys I've ever met. Ditto Tilt - that guy's mind is something else. The launch of VNA 16 (Invader) at POW - and laughing at POW wondering how we managed to control the queue (clue: it's called common sense) 3. Biggest disappointments? The realisation that some artists you like and admire are, in fact, total dicks. Certain galleries shady practices with regards to pre-selling work. Doing people favours and having it thrown back in your face by them ebaying a gift "they really wanted". 4. Who are your rising stars? Dabs Myla - break out year for them and couldn't happen to two better people IMO. Nychos - doesn't do a lot of gallery work but his street pieces are hands down better than most people out there 5. Best show of the year? Swoon "Murmation" at BRP. Never been a massive fan but it was utterly fantastic.

I am awfully late with this, apologies: 1. Post pictures of your top 3 acquisitions this year: Caitlin Hackett: A Flightless Bird Jessica Harrison: Jane Ana Bagayan: Skeletons 2. Best experiences? Getting to see Miss Van's work in person (and chatting a bit with her) at the opening of her show in Vienna, finally seeing two pieces from Jessica Joslin in person (at Stolen Space in London) which makes me want to own a piece soon. 3. Biggest disappointments? Awful dealings with a very renowned gallery. Took some time to restore my trust in galleries. The biggest disappointment is that I heard way too late about Marci Washington's show in Leeds in November. I would have tried to get there if I had known about it earlier (not just one or two days before). Bummer. 4. Who are your rising stars? The ones I discovered for myself are probably no rising stars any more. I am always late to the game. 5. Best show of the year? My art life takes mainly place online, and there are just too many good shows out there I wish I could have seen in person. From the ones I attended, Roa and Miss Van at INOPERAbLE Gallery in Vienna were awesome, and it is good to see a local gallery establishing themselves.
