I went to SF that day to cover the Alternative Press Expo and while leaving a friend brought me by this show. I am so glad he did. I always liked the work of Ron English, but now after seeing these in person I am a huge fan. I took a bunch of pics of the show. They can be found here: www.flickr.com/photos/glitchbox/sets/72157608617238941/My favorite one was the one Sleepboy posted "Peter and Paul" Man, can this guy paint or what?

Thanks for pics Mr. Creep. Seeing these makes me realize Ron's technical skills are at a very high level. Nicely executed.

Seeing these makes me realize Ron's technical skills are at a very high level. Nicely executed. Too often, it seems that the technical genius of Ron's work is ignored because of the content. I know I'm certainly guilty of it sometimes. The man is a true master with oils, though. It's rare for the lighting and rendering in one of his paintings to not blow me away. Admittedly, I wouldn't personally want to hang the bulk of his work on my walls. But he certainly deserves credit, not only for his conceptual ingenuity, but also for his painterly strengths.

Agreed, I think the problem I had was not the content, but never really being able to see his work in person. Images on the net are so horrible for showing the true dynamic nature of paintings. This is why I often get my camera right up there and show some texture. Now, I wouldn't hang one of his Kiss works, mainly because I don't like Kiss, but he does have some others I wouldn't mind having.

You recall what that piece was priced at? Or what the range was, as they were all big and similar in size?

only Ron English could pull off a show about Kiss and Gene Simmons' secrets this well. Some of the stuff is really quite different coming from Ron, but nonetheless very impressive.

Just stopped by to see the show yesterday. Amazing by the way, the technique is astonishing. By idea alone I might not think of hanging one in my house, but after seeing them, I would not hesitate. He pulls off the old master technique like no one else in this arena.

for those that went, what do you think of the framing option Ron has chosen for these?

for those that went, what do you think of the framing option Ron has chosen for these? The frames were pretty mellow, but I can honestly say that I spent little to no time thinking about them. I was more entranced with the brushwork and colors he used. I'm sure some might change them if they bought one of them, I would keep them the same. I like how they don't distract from the work very much.
