Here’s the details on both.

Breeze Block Gallery is proud to present it’s latest blockbuster group exhibition in Gallery 1 this September, Buddy System Invitational.
Curator Sven Davis invited 22 international artists to participate in the exhibition and produce one artwork at 16x20 inches and one at 8x8 inches. In turn, each of the participants invited a fellow artist to bring along for the ride and produce two artworks of the same scale.
The resultant body of work is to be shown in a grid arrangement with the invited artist and their buddy’s work presented alongside each other.
Buddy System Invitational underpins the spirit of cooperation within this exciting group of artists. The exhibition’s overall grid aesthetic has generated a wonderful mixture of both planned and serendipitous outcomes, with the artists embracing the collaborative nature of the exhibit to varying levels and contexts, from intertwining thematic and physical presentation of their work to the extreme of working on the same canvas via international exchanges.
The common brief on size of work produced acts as a control mechanism in order to align an aesthetic vision that presents the collective body of work as a comparative exercise for the participants both in their traditional role as artists, and also as co-curators of the exhibition.
The participating Buddy System Invitational artists are listed below:
Andrew Schoultz - Gianluca Franzese
Ben Venom - Megan Gorham
Brendan Monroe – Anders Oinonen
Chris Ballantyne – Rebecca Carino
D*Face – Word To Mother
Edwin Ushiro – Tessar Lo
Erin Murray - Amze Emmons
Evah Fan – Jen Corace
Gary Taxali - Roman Klonek

Breeze Block Gallery is proud to present Schematical Sabbatical, the debut solo exhibition from Portland based artist Chris Valkov in the Gallery 2 space this September.
Chris Valkov is a precision oriented painter, at least up to a point. His background in architectural hand drafting has subconsciously shaped his composition skills into an array of schematic overlays. He has taken on the adventure of turning them into large paintings relying on diagrammatic visual vocabulary. In addition, Chris enjoys employing the self-expressive qualities of art. In his most recent body of work Schematical Sabbatical he strives to communicate loose narratives and direct commentaries, from satirical to daunting, in stories told by objects, symbols, and diagrams. But if the subject matter weighs heavy, a light-hearted approach keeps the artwork more digestible. In his process, if Chris finds himself chasing precision better suited for a computer, he spontaneously loosens the grip allowing gestural elements offered by the free hand, brush, and paint to remind him he is making art while paying homage to graphic craftsmanship.
Both exhibitions open at Breeze Block Gallery on Thursday 5th September 2013 6-10pm.
Chris Valkov and several of the Buddy System Invitational artists will be present.
About Chris Valkov
The bio that follows may be much like yours. Yes, Chris Valkov grew up in a typically comfortable suburban home. His mom probably hung his first drawings on the refrigerator. Yes, he spent the 90's skateboarding, making pitiful attempts at graffiti, and extensively listening to punk rock. But growing up among the artificiality and belligerent consumption in the south Californian sea of suburban sprawl, he always felt at odds. Chris learned to draft and escaped to Portland, Oregon, which is his home to this day. No BA or MFA art advancement accomplishments that can be helpful are to be added at this point of the paragraph. Chris considers his best schooling the highly technical graphics that his father was producing as a mechanical engineer. He has been utilizing that particular means of communication, with ever evolving personal appropriations, to paint out what's churning in his head.
Chris Valkov has participated in several group exhibitions in Portland and San Francisco including Wider Than a Postcard earlier this year at Breeze Block Gallery. This is his first solo exhibition.
