John Brophy “Breaking The Spell”- new paintings
opens December 5th 2013- January 4th 2014
John Brophy creates paintings that blend artifacts from global cultures and belief systems and juxtaposes them with the overarching affects of western consumer culture. Taking cues from the religious imagery of 15th century Flemish Primitive art, he takes their use of intimate compositions and understated gestures and reworks them using contemporary imagery to create surreal yet immediate new icons for the modern age. Brophy works in a laborious process in which he builds up each painting using a computer 3d program, then uses the created image as a template for the finished work which is completely executed in oil paint on panel.

Femke Hiemstra - new “The Timid Cabbage” drawing mini show and official book release!
December 5th 2013- January 4th 2014
Amsterdam based painter Femke Hiemstra’s meticulously tight, jewel like mixed media paintings and exquisitely rendered black and white drawings are homes to a dark fairytale land where inanimate objects come to life and frolic with animal neighbors. Lollipops become ship captains, strawberries become giant wrestlers, and vegetables become Halloween gods with lantern eyes. Femke occasionally uses typography in her work, using words from various languages and letters in her paintings to further enhance the narrative while still retaining a playful sense of mystery, or as a visual device to frame in the scenery, as if you were looking at her world through a secret window. She also uses found objects to paint on, such as boxes and wrappers, to create imaginary products with magical properties.
Sympathetic Press has just released a new book based on Hiemstra’s show “The Timid Cabbage” from 2011 in which the artist illustrated a playful poem by Charles Krafft about a little cabbage who doesn’t do what his little cabbage village wants him to, but rather goes and has wonderful adventures instead. This new show with feature all new drawings done for the book, and we will have copies of both the regular version and deluxe version of the book on hand. The deluxe version features a printed slipcase, tipped in autograph sheet, and a signed, limited edition print by Hiemstra.
