I like Eddie Martinez's work. Undecided on the Torey Thornton offspring. It's hard to tell from just once painting. As an aside it seems easier to like more minimal/abstract works like Lund, Falls, Darmstaedter. With figurative elements it becomes more specific in a way. Whereas geometric pieces can more easily become wallpaper decoration if that makes sense. And I don't mean that as a negative to any of the artists mentioned as I like them all.

" ...enjoy Thornton’s tricks and don’t ask too much to his painting, it would be a mistake to consider it self contained."

I've mentioned this to a few of my friends on here already - Torey Thornton's OHWOW show is the best exhibition I have seen this fall and is the best painting show I have seen in a long time. It is worth the trip to experience in person, as the scale and the finish (and examination of hand and brush work and the masterful flatness that is achieved through the interaction of collage and paint) and context of each work relative to the others all plays into your viewing and appreciation. It is both a statement show and also highly personal, as I think there are works that respectively reference his mother and father.
There has been some frustration among a lot of us in terms of acquiring, as I know anyone would love to have any of these pieces, but institutions are adding it to their collections at the moment and some are already confirmed (see under "Public Collections"): oh-wow.com/artists/torey-thornton/ I also personally know that at least two major (literally major) institutions are going through committees this week to decide.

From the jpegs of his work I've seen online it's been hit or miss for me, maybe the new stuff is up a level or much better in the flesh. It's seems like every week there's another 20 something wunderkind anointed art star. I just hope they aren't ripping Torey off and they're actually selling these paintings at prices that match demand. It really gets my goat – what does that mean anyway – when galleries go around saying they don't want to raise prices too fast because they want to keep them "affordable" for museums ... meanwhile they really only sell 2 to museums and the other 8 "golden tickets" go to their friends for 20k. 5 years later they get flipped for 6 figures. It happens all the time in this business. I guess if you're looking for another "next basquiat," young, naive, african american artist that possibly maybe is attainable? You could try this guy: instagram.com/devintroy

Everyone is riding off the Dan Colen train.... maybe we should look at who worked for Ryan McGinley Funny these days artist wish they can sell their work and when they do they are happy and they sell a boat load. Next thing you know its in auction and the artist is upset..

Devin produces some interesting work but what is it with prices being so outrageously high so early in an artist's career?!

It looks like there are now three institutions under the "Public Collections" header versus two earlier in the week. I would assume The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, was one of the two major institutions considering his work? Is it possible that various institutions regularly look at emerging artists and that unless a gallery publicizes it we just don't hear about it most of the time unless it's likely a work is going to be acquired? I would guess that most dealers try to court museum committees for the very reason that just the mention of an artist being considered generates some hype and gives the dealers more leverage in their pricing. They get the work in front of as many museums as possible, year after year, and hope something sticks. When it happens the CV gets another name under the "Public Collections" list and a press release. Within this game I suppose we can assume if an institution is not on the list they passed on the work or are not interested.
