Travis Louie "Strange Neighbors" Exhibition: November 29, 2008 through January 3, 2009 Opening Reception: Saturday, November 29th, 7 to 10 pm “A man is cursed by a goat, a strange furry being is discovered sleeping in a hedge, an engine driver can’t seem to stop vibrating in his sleep, a man overcomes his phobia of spiders...” – Travis Louie Through his hyperrealist paintings and drawings, Travis Louie presents an alternate realm of creatures, chimera, and outcasts dressed in their finest suits. These portraits, created using several transparent acrylic layers over a tight graphite drawing on smooth boards reference old Victorian photographs. The surreality of the imagery is compounded as these eerie beings pose and engage through subtle yet unique human expressions. This odd cast of characters is born out of Louie’s active imagination, love of science fiction, film noir and German expressionism. He has exhibited in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Montreal, Rome, Berlin, and Hamburg. His work has been featured in several publications including Hi Fructose, Juxtapoz, Inked, Statement, and Spectrum Books. “Strange Neighbors,” Artwork by Travis Louie runs November 29 through January 3, 2009, at Fuse Gallery, 93 2nd Ave (between 5th & 6th Sts, 2nd Ave stop on the F), NYC, NY. The opening reception, on Saturday, November 29th, from 7 to 10 pm, is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Fuse Gallery at 212.777.7988 or fusegall@fusegallerynyc.com.

I always thought that Ron English was the hardest working man out there but I must say that Travis has really been all over the globe with an impressive amount of shows and pieces each one more exquisite than the last one!!!!
Rumour has it that the pieces that he is doing for fuse are all going to be really affordable for many of you who have wanted to buy a Travis Louie original. The price may be as low as 600, and sized accordingly.

If you have a moment, could you elaborate on your technique? I always just assumed they were graphite drawings. How do these acrylic layers come into play? And what are they? Do you affix these clear sheets to the drawing after the fact to produce a photo-like finish? After reading about Chris Berens crazy methods in the recent Hi-Fructose and just figuring out how Jason Thielke's gel transfers work, I'm fascinated by all the different approaches artists take with their craft.
