"This Too Shall Pass"
New Work by Deth P. Sun
Please join us for the opening reception
Saturday January 10th, 7pm - 10pm
Show Runs:
January 10th - February 14th
In this Oakland artist's first hometown solo show since 2002, Deth P. Sun will fill the gallery with over a hundred small paintings, larger works, and a site specific installation.
Deth P. Sun’s artwork has long focused on the mythological quest of anthropomorphic cats. The characters are often equipped only with a blade and a lantern as they travel vast landscapes of mountain ranges, haunted caverns, turbulent oceans, and misting forests. A cast of legendary wolves, ghosts, vampires, turtles, and birds are regularly encountered as accomplices, antagonists, or both. Illustrative in nature, one can’t help but sense the broader narrative that exists between each series, despite the artist’s avoidance of imposing any explicit meaning on to the viewer.
The exhibition closes on February 14th with the release of his first published book, “I See It All”, published by Rowan Morrison Gallery (2009). The 64-page book replicates the sequence, size and paper-weight of one of Sun’s moleskin journals created in August of 2008. Details of a closing reception and book release party will be announced soon.
Since graduating from CCA in 2002, Deth P. Sun has exhibited several times with Giant Robot (SF, NY & LA), and widely elsewhere both nationally and abroad. He has contributed his illustrations to Giant Robot, Urban Outfitters and Chronicle Books. Prints by Deth P. Sun can be found in the Rowan Morrison Print Portfolio year-round.
