Here is the preview for the documentary Herb and Dorothy (The Vogels) - the couple that build a world class collection on a postal worker and librarian salary. www.herbanddorothy.com/I've been fortunate to meet them a handful of times and they are really nice people. They have sacrificed just about every possible comfort to buy art, and when they couldn't buy it they traded for it. But if I personally knew Chuck Close, I would also offer to watch his cat for a painting. They have bequeathed their entire collection (I think over 4000 pieces) to the National Gallery of Art.

Watched this today with my wife via Netflix streaming.
It's a really enjoyable little documentary. Those two have/had an unbelievably jaw dropping collection. There's something "special" about the way they go about their lives and their art - without pretense or pseudo-intellectualism, open-minded and with raw honesty and pure passion. Like two kids... and the NY art world is their candy shop.
