Logan posted up some pics on his flickr of him exploring the drainage tunnels under Las Vegas after being inspired by a book. After reading Matt O'Brien's book "Beneath the Neon - life and death in the Las Vegas tunnels" I had to visit them. You can read about, and order Matt's book here - www.beneaththeneon.com/The drainage tunnels that run underneath the city of Las Vegas are massive. It is a virtual ant colony of concrete tubes that snake underneath the city like a massive prehistoric snake. Nearly 300 miles of tunnels are underneath the city. To put that into easy to understand terms, try to imagine the distance from San Francisco to Los Angeles underneath the city. Hundreds of people live in these tunnels, and many of them are displaced, and their possessions are washed away each time a torrential downpour hits the city. Because the land is so arid the soil cannot soak up the rain. This water quickly gains momentum and rushes into the tunnels where it gains more speed. In some part of the tunnels the water can rise 12 inches per MINUTE. If it begins to rain at night when the homeless are sleeping they can (and have) wake to their bed being carried downstream. This particular tunnel runs directly underneath one of the most historic casinos on the Las Vegas strip. If you were to bore a hole in the celling, and dig upwards for about 15 feet, you would find yourself in the lobby of this casino amongst the slot machines and all you can eat buffets. It's amazing that as the glitz and glamour of the city blinks above ground, you can walk underneath it in a place where the darkness swallows the light. These tunnels are pitch black. you can't see your hand in front of your face for most of the journey. There are occasional manhole covers or storm grates that thrust a shaft of light into the barren landscape, but otherwise you are forced to hope your flashlight doesnt go out. This journey was made possible through the friendly help of Matthew O'Brien, so support him by buying his book. It's a good read.
