I found out about Tristram's work through him showing at Josh Liner's summer group show. pretty amazing stuff, but i am a total sucker for compositions including architectural elements. the additions of graffiti seal the deal for me. what impresses me the most is that these are all watercolour pieces, which is an unforgiving medium at the best of times, but this guy seems to really own the technique. he has a solo show coming up next week in Toronto at LE Gallery le-gallery.ca/ and a solo coming up next year with Joshua Liner too. tristramlansdowne.com/

every time I look at his work, I am overtaken by the fact that he's a watercolorist. His control is awe inspiring.

Just got the preview. The work looks really good, and is inexpensive for the size.

Breeze Block Gallery presents in Gallery 1: Order of Operations: A Two-Person Exhibition by Erin Murray & Tristram LansdowneCurated by Sven Davis Breeze Block Gallery Portland OR. 6 February 2014 – 1 March 2014 Breeze Block Gallery is proud to present Order of Operations; A Two-Person Exhibition of all new work by Erin Murray & Tristram Lansdowne in the Breeze Block Gallery 1 space. For this new series of work, Erin Murray has crafted a series of bespoke shaped panels from plywood to which she mounted paper to the surface. Her work has traditionally detached the buildings and structures she delicately renders in graphite from a landscape context by isolating them within a negative space, lending a surreal quality to her work. For Order of Operations, she has further removed the building from it’s typical landscape realm and has allowed it to be read as a singular entity or body—something with which one could potentially empathize. This vague anthropomorphism is further elaborated with titles derived from the goofiest of suggestions from a baby names generator smartphone app. Through the empathetic impulse, Murray presents our own humanity within her work; a sense of humble absurdity combined with idealism and guileless hope for the future. Tristram Lansdowne harmonizes nature within the built environment. His landscapes present a surrealist future vision of a concrete realities. Using watercolor as his primary medium, Lansdowne addresses the nature of buildings and landscape as meaningful reflections of our humanity. Each structure, no matter how humble, teems with embedded information about our cultural history and human habits. His work seeks to chase the quiet moments where a building transcends its functional purpose and can seem almost human. For Order of Operations, the imposition of order on the world, be it architectural, natural or horticultural is referenced by Lansdowne as he investigates the idea of re-enactment within our built landscape; how we reuse forms over and over again in an effort to naturalize our environment, but which inevitably results in varying degrees of absurdity. About Erin MurrayErin Murray was born in Philadelphia in 1979 and currently lives and works in that city. She received her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2001. Her work draws on the built environment to empathically explore themes of humanity. Recent solo exhibitions have been at Nancy Margolis Gallery in New York, the Fleisher Art Memorial in Philadelphia, and The Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts in Wilmington, DE. Her work has been included in recent group exhibitions at Vox Populi Gallery in Philadelphia and Salon Zurcher in New York. In 2012 she was awarded the West Collects acquisition prize and joined the artist's collective Vox Populi. You can find her work published in New American Paintings, Tabletop Zine, and Dirty Laundry Magazine. About Tristram LansdowneTristram Lansdowne was born in 1983 in Victoria, British Columbia and currently lives in Toronto. He studied visual arts at the University of Victoria and at the Ontario College of Art & Design, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2007.
