Me and my wife have been kicking this idea around for two years to sell everything go and rent an amazing apartment in New York and just live for 1 year. We know we cant afford to live in NYC like we want to ( meaning area and doing things ) but figure with savings and selling all our belongs ( have family friend who would literally buy all furnishings and art ) would you ever consider this. Or main issue is having to start over when we move somewhere after NYC. We would be smart enough to put 18K away to start fresh when we were done.
I know asking strangers this is not going to help make a decision but we have been really thinking about this and figure any ideas may help us look at things we are not seeing ( health insurance is through my moms company )

New York is a great city, and one of my favorite places, but I would not mortgage my future to live there for a year. I'd bank the $18K for my retirement and find some other way to realize whatever it is you're seeking from this proposal.
I lived there in Greenwich Village for 3 years as a law student. It's an exciting place because of its dynamism, and it took me a couple of years to get over that when I graduated and moved to SF, which is beautiful but not dynamic. But it's dirty, expensive and has a draining intensity, too. To live in the city long-term, I think you'd have to have tremendous financial resources because you're constantly seeking some kind of insulating refuge, particularly if you ever tried to raise a family there. At least that's what I determined, and it was the reason I didn't stay even though I had ample opportunities to do so.

Thank you Weezy, we figured we would go with 78K figure we would need 60K for living. NYC is an example we have a few other cities in mind, but you make some valid points
