Andrew Hem :: Cold Water July 16th – August 13th, 2011Opening reception: Saturday, July 16th, 7pm-10pm Culver City, CA – LeBasse Projects is excited to present, ‘Cold Water’ an exhibition of new works from Los Angeles based artist Andrew Hem. In this highly anticipated solo project, Hem confronts the viewer with themes of isolation and personal conflict. After focusing his 2010 body of work on his Cambodian heritage and how different his life might have been should his family have stayed during the regime of the Khmer Rouge, Hem now moves forward with an even more introspective series of paintings. The new paintings explore the feeling of isolation we get when removed from those close to us – and the ensuing personal darkness that follows. As the viewer progresses through the paintings we can see how Hem emerges from those dark places and finds the road back to happiness. Hem states that the title ‘Cold Water’ is a reference to that feeling of ‘being surrounded by cold situations and places.’ Hem masterfully builds lush, yet cold, landscapes wherein his portraits longingly stare for someone to connect with. Filled with personal references, Hem’s paintings still create a canvas all should be able to find themselves in. For preview: contact@lebasseprojects.com

I love the vantage point Hem gives the viewer in this painting. The warm color of her dress in the cool environment is beautiful as well. Just marked down the 16th on my calendar. Thanks for the info LeBasse!

Super excited for this show! Andrew's working on a mural this week. Be sure to check it out - it's on Washington Blvd. and National in Culver City, next to the Herakut mural.

The centerpiece to a multipanel installation for Andrew's show this Saturday. I am really excited to see everything finally up on the walls. My favorite painting of the year so far is in this show...

I had a chance to catch up with artist Andrew Hem and ask him a few questions about his upcoming solo show "Cold Water" which opens Saturday at LeBasse Projects :: Culver City. Erica J: What inspired you for your upcoming show, ‘Cold Water?’ Andrew Hem: Personal issues. I’m not good with talking about things. I needed to get some stuff out of my chest and the best way for me to do that was through painting. Q: You started off mostly doing graffiti and letters, correct? How did you make the switch to figures? A: Well to make a long story short I simply got arrested. Spent four of the longest days in county jail and it turned my life around. I wish I could say "no matter how many times I get locked up I am still going to go out to the streets" but all it takes is a few days with a cell mate named Bruno to scare me straight. Q: You seem to travel a lot. How do the places you visit influence your work? A: The visits heavily influence my paintings. Every time I travel anywhere I always take my moleskin and document my surroundings. It’s kind of like a director doing research on his next film. I take tons of photos and paint every chance I get. If I rolled solo I would paint every location I stopped at. But going with a partner limits the amount of times you stop for a quick study. Q: What’s next? Any ideas what the theme for your next show will be? A: I have no clue. I feel like I am at peace with the situation that had been bothering me for the past year. I don’t know what is next, but that is the exciting part. Don't miss Andrew Hem :: Cold Water this Saturday July 16th at LeBasse Projects :: Culver City.

Just posted an interview with Andrew at Erratic Phenomena. He talks about the story behind the theme of his new show, and how graffiti changed his life. Also, here's a little video that I made with a friend during the completion of Andrew's recent Culver City mural.
