I went to see this last week. They are very, very pretty pictures. Conceptually, they leave a little bit to be desired.

This small piece was sold in the White Columns benefit auction for more than 3 times of its retail. I had a proxy bid and got outbid quickly. My goal of acquiring a Ryan Sullivan is fizzling out.

Ha! I actually bid on that Rudolf Stingel and stopped when I realized a couple of bidders were very emotionally invested. I was going to bid on his work on paper at Christies in May but just not too crazy about the color scheme. I am not sure why but I just can't get myself into Angel Otero's works. Whether it's the texture or the color, his works are just un-inspiring to me. That Stingel on canvas was simply a fine piece. By placing it next to Kassay, it only accentuates how good that piece is. Believe me, I've been working on a nice Stingel. Maybe I will get lucky in October.

Not sure if you are still interested in Ryan Sullivan's work, but I see that the first large painting in your post is being sold as part of a selling exhibition benefiting for LAXArt. It might be worth giving them a call, since it doesn't seem to be an auction-based benefit...so the price might be reasonable.
I'd buy it myself if I had the cash. I've seen a lot of Ryan's work and it's pretty spectacular. Though even the images are great, they don't even come close to the presence of the paintings in person.
Let us know what you find out.

i can see that too, ryan has quoted many a time that the work is supposed to crack and move but how can anyone predict what will happen in 10 years time?

Love the topic of conservation. Was in a class taught by one of MoMA's conservators, and he was telling horror stories about keeping pieces together. A particularly famous de Kooning requires about $30k a year in treatment to prevent it from disintegrating and still, up close, it looks like hell with flaps of paint hanging off 1-2" above the canvas, craze marks everywhere, etc. Though, when a painting is $25million, I guess $30k a year in upkeep is cheap.

Another conservation one that I love researching is John Chamberlain's foam sculptures. If you can get it cheap, I highly recommend adding a copy of the catalogue raisonne of foam sculptures that was published by the Menil Collection. I think the book prices out around $15-$25 on amazon, and its well worth it given how it really drives home the point that you have to consider how things are going to age and look in a few decades.
