I have a large heavy piece that I want to hang on a wall which is double height so that the bottom of the piece is around 2.5 metres / 100 inches off the floor. The space I have to erect any kind of scaffolding is pretty limited, being about 1.8 metres / 70 inches wide, with windows to one side and a gallery balcony to the other. The piece itself is around 72x50 inches and requires 2 people to lift it.
Can anyone offer any advice on how best to go about this? I'm thinking I should probably get some professionals in.

I would go with Cleat hanging system (hangman). Here: www.artright.com/hardware.htmSomewhere towards the middle of the page. There are 3 lengths. Pick the one that is closer to your frame dimensions. It's rated for up to 40 lbs per linear foot. Since your frame weights 80 lbs you'll need at least 2 feet so I would go with the second option (36'' length). Or your can try adjustable D-rings (same link, they call them "HOOK-UPS! -adjustable picture frame hangers"). They hold up to 100 lb!!!

My heavy pieces are hung with cleats. But it's really hard to hang because they have to be absolutely level and a very heavy piece requires at least 2-3 people because you have to drop the painting into the cleats on each side.
This way of hanging also keeps the weight from bearing down at one point and stressing the stretcherboards and frame. That's what my framer told me.
Good luck!

I have a simple equation for judging whether I should carry out any work in my home...
If how long it would take a professional x 2 (it will take me twice as long) + materials + fucking about < what I would make at work = pay a man to do it...

Thanks for the suggestions all but I was really referring to getting the bloody thing up there to hang it at around 3.5m. Ladders would be suicidal so I guess indoor scaffolding with enough couter weight to balance it out is the only option. The more I think about it the less I think it can be done by anyone except a pro.

I'm at the point of having to fill walls I can't even reach without risking life and limb.

I also say Pro. I had my Large Frizzell hung on a wall that was two stories and they hung it on the top half of the wall so it could be viewed from the second floor and I was amazed how he did it so easy, him a ladder and a rope.
