Did Anyone see the crazy email about qualifying to buy a piece from the show?

It seems Upper Playground have delved into the realms of self-importance. Does Aryz know this? Does it matter? The qualifying questions are at the least insulting and intrusive, at best clumsy and ignorant. If you need to ask those questions it speaks volumes for your gallery.

It does not make sense to me why I might potentially have to collect a number of other artist's work before I am allowed to even have a chance at making a purchase. Essentially it's a bias in favor of people who have 'mature' collections. Which makes sense in a way if the aim of the gallery is to 'place' the work - potentially adding greater perceived worth/credibility/whatever else to said artist. But then what about people who are just starting to collect. In the end it is up to the gallery though. Not complaining or whining, just making a general comment.
Maybe a lottery style system where you make a minimal deposit (or percentage based on the price of the piece you are interested in buying) in advance to be on the list would have been better than trying to 'vet' potential buyers. Then if you don't buy a piece, you get your deposit back. There are probably multiple problems with this. At least you might find out who is serious about making a purchase and who is 'kicking tires' so to speak.

massively disappointing show in numerous ways Agreed, skeletons, fruit baskets and old cars, hard to see where he wanna go with this, seems like he's much better of on the streets. Love his murals but sometimes it's hard to conform that into a gallery show, plus UP didn't do him any favors with the hyping and pricing, 40.000 for a wooden sculpture from an artist doing his first solo?

He had a big solo in Europe last year that seemed to be off the radar of most but it did well. Liqen is already undergoing the same 'handling' and it really bums me out, drawings going for 2-3K now all of a sudden. Too many are going for the quick buck, not thinking long term or about growing one's patron base at all.
That sculpture was 40K? WHOA!

Imo it was way overpriced for the first round... now not so much so... maybe a bit. This guy is so talented and doesn't really like to part with his art.
Funny thinkspace that you live in a glass house. I am sure you never make sure pieces go to the right collector. And you split 50/50 with the artist... so who is to blame for the prices?
$40,000 for a sculpture... steep? sure! It is his first sculpture and took him 3 months to make. It is utterly flawless in person - as if a master craftsman had been working with wood for 50 years.
Doesn't make sense to hate on true talent. I can't afford many artists I would like to... doesn't mean they are overpriced... even if only a few sell.

are there any actual galleries that split less than 50/50?

Don't see much hate on his talent, love his streetwork but its obvious that it posses a lot more quality than this show.
And the argument for driving prices up because the artist don't really wanna part? Why do a show in the first place then?
I lack the vision from his murals, the execution is flawless but I was extremely disappointed with this body of work, simply because it lacked the same energy and creativity that we know him for.
As mentioned, the prices didn't do him any favors either and yes, 40.000 for that wooden piece is just insane, even if it took him 3 years. Lots of dedicated artists spend more than 3 months on a piece, not unusual.
I am sure Thinkspace can talk their own case but you will have a hard time finding a more dedicated and friendly gallery than this, they do care where the art goes.

It is great that you can be disappointed with a show having only seen it on your computer in a small PDF. Props to you. Maybe you should direct more artists on what to paint and how to make you happy.
Only one piece is $40k. His other flat wood sculpture - which is 60" x 80" (if not bigger) is $12k. The large canvas approx 40" x 70" is $10k and is very similar to a wall piece he recently did in Spain if you paid any attention. Small pieces started at 1/4 that price.
So easy to be a critic ... just need a keyboard. Forget about facts or getting them straight. Even harder to admit when you have gone too far.
As for thinkspace needing the price list for a good laugh... now that was just really classy and tasteful. Enough said.

Listen, it´s a public forum, people will of course comment on what they see, otherwise there would be no need for such a place like this. It is not a question of making me happy, it´s a question on having a vision and if you are lucky enough other folks can see that vision as well. I personally don´t see the thin red line in this exhibtion like in his murals. Cars, skulls and fruitbaskets? How bout you enlighten me and tell me what you think is so great about this body of work that justifies prices above 3K for a small study and 10-40000 for larger works? Very settled artists don´t even charge this much for their work. Take Ian Francis, he has a show coming up at Joshua Liner and he´s right around the same pricelevel and the guy has been around longer than I can remember. So what justifies these prices, please enlighten me? I´ve seen the pdf, seen the preview pictures, the pricelist and I am not that impressed, so what facts am I missing here? Enough said? You have said a lot but not anything that makes a whole lot of sense.

I can't afford many artists I would like to... doesn't mean they are overpriced... even if only a few sell. Well, I never said I was laughing at the pricing and I was never hating on him as an artist (love his work). I was very surprised by the pricing for sure, but was referring in my post to the reply letter many were talking about regarding placement of the works (and when I saw that letter, I did get a good laugh). Sure, every gallery wrestles with placement issues for some artists (it's a part of the business I'm not a huge fan of), but to put it out there in such a b&w fashion gave me a chuckle is all. I'd expect someone to call me out if I sent out a letter like that. I even defended that this wasn't his first show. With that said, art is all about supply and demand and he simply doesn't put much 'out there', so for the folks that could afford this show, kudos to them. We operate as most do on a 50/50 basis and earn our 50% via full-page ads in Juxtapoz and Hi-Fructose every issue, banner ads on Hi-Fructose and other sites, marketing via our site, a large social reach, spreading of WIP shots all over the place, etc. Too many folks just seem to turn the lights on these days in their gallery space and send out a preview mail and a FB invite a week prior to the opening and sit back and rest on their laurels and take in 50%. Not throwing stones here, just stating a fact and I talk with a lot of artists who are taking notice of this rather troubling trend too.

As a massive fan of Aryz work ( as you might noticed from my posts on his thread), I was lucky enough to be in SF, and see the show in person.. I think the studies and drawings showed are just that - studies and drawings, and not completed pieces.. So talking about where is he going with this, doesnt really count I think.. The pieces worth discussing are the 2 bigger paintings, and everyone that seen them in person will agree they are incredible.. So is the statue, but I dont know enough about it to discus it..
As for the way gallery handled this - I must agree with most of people here.. That email was weird to say the least, but i answered it very honestly expecting it actually meant something.. But when the preview was released, I realized it meant nothing.. The pricing is most definitely off, and that has NOTHING to do with Aryz, or the quality of his work.. However far from his murals these studies are, Id still love to own one, cause each of them is clearly showing his recognizable style, technique, and skills. But priced like this, it just doesnt feel right.. Bigger pieces are truly great, and fantastic examples of his work, but again, the pricing is very off.. Im pretty sure if the show was priced 1/3rd of these prices, it would sell out instantly.. I saw the way people were reacting to the work, the way they respect the artist, but the numbers just stood there in between that all.. Finally, I know that Aryz is not to happy with the pricing either, and I really hope this wontl leave a big scar on his career cause I still wanna see him doing a show like the one he did in Barca in 2011 (look it up guys if you havent, and you will see how great his canvas work can be)..

What were the prices sal? I never saw them... Just had the email sent to me by a friend who initially enquired.... Despite the apparently high prices did the work sell?
