It was a very nice show and as much as I love tin I have to say the doktor a piece was the highlight. That thing was amazing. Overall a very nice group of artists. This was probably my favorite show at rivet since I started going 6 or 7 months ago. Especially nice since the gas mask theme itself didn't really appeal to me.

I was always a little confused by the way the piece looked on Rivet's site. Blog: Gallery: I suppose it's just a matter of a higher resolution image showing a clearer representation of the piece, along with some of the unrefined qualities. I believe that the first image from his blog was completed in pastels (or whatever he uses) on that sandpaper-ish stock (again not sure what it is) and the second is with oils painted over that first study. But I wonder if this has to do with Tin's attempt to convert to oil, and maybe the oils not looking as crisp when painted on top of pastel work. I wonder if it's a little bit of an oil-conversion learning curve showing or just the grainy effect he's going for? Either way, it's a great piece, and all Tin's pieces have that look when examined closely. Just wasn't sure if he was attempting to discard or continue that effect with his movement towards oils. I think it just threw me off a little when I first saw the image of this piece online and compared it in my head to what I had seen on his blog.

I received an inquiry during the preview in regards to the mediums Tin used for his piece. And this is how he explained his process.
"I would definitely say the art is an oil painting. Initially it was pastel which was guidance as an underpainting. The pastel underpainting was sealed-covered over with transparent gesso. Then I was able to paint the entire image again in strictly oil paint. I remember doing about 6 layers of oil painting over the gesso. There is no mixture or presence of pastel in the oil painting process"
I hope this answers some questions in regards to the medium.
Thanks Laura
