Anyone make it the the Drawing Center show up now in NY? From what I've seen online, it's a somewhat new direction for him. More figurative, while retaining the expressionist and racial bent. There seems to be a lot of emotion in this series from what I can see. Reminds me of the frantic energy of Basquiat coupled with the otherness of Ligon, perhaps with a little Schnabel too. m.hauserwirth.com/exhibitions/2364/rashid-johnson-smile/list-of-works/3/

I feel disrespectful saying this, as I do respect the creative process, but this really strikes me as stepping too closely on Jonas Wood territory, down to the perspectives and angles and subject matter.

Is this list meant to be damage control management? Collectors seemed worried about how many rain paintings Smith had produced so perhaps this is to assure them that there are no more of them being made? It's an usual list for an artist so young to put out. Sort of a Lucien Smith catalog raissone that someone advised him to publish. As a guy who tries to shoehorn as many catalogue raisonnes into his bookshelf as possible, I love this and wish more artists would do this(especially on the web, because my love of the raisonne is pricey - lol) I agree. I like the transparency of this. Takes power out of exclusive, secretive galleries. As an aside, I really like his new direction. Very Doig. Shows real talent and craft and sensitivity.

Surprised there's no thread on him, so here you go. Anyone make it out to Brooklyn for the current show? I'm impressed by his growth. He's got a gentle, deft touch that's both appeasing and challenging I find.
