i always liked his work until i recently went to a solo exhibit he had in chelsea, found out that he paints on top of photos he took, kinda bummed me out a bit.... although i do like his street work like pictured above, the oils (which are usually appropriately referred to as oil on mixed media on canvas) just don't do it for me anymore (technically speaking) see more of his gallery work here: www.dfngallery.com/artists/artists_represented/dan_witz.htm

Hm.... I wonder how much of it is photos? Probably a lot. For example those recent kilroy variations...did he just paint the grills they are peaking through? Well, I believe he will have some work at Thinkspace for their "streets of brooklyn" show so I will be able to see it firsthand.

His Kilroy Variations are usually vinyl print outs of pieces/photos he did once, then he turns them into multiples to put up about the city. The two pieces we have are multiples from the streets that will be accompanied by photos of similar pieces installed in their proper environment.
Had no idea about his 'light' pieces were being painted over photos - bit of a bummer, but still no denying his strength of lighting. He just needs to loose the crutch of painting over photos, which many do still it seems, though I know many that do do so, are trying to get away from it as it becomes more and more looked down upon it seems.

Seeing his work at "From the Streets of Brooklyn" really reminded me how crucial placement is for street art to really stand out. It goes beyond just simply getting up. Not the best photo, but it's apparent how his work really doesn't pop on a white gallery wall.

Those are cool indeed, the placement in high traffic area or bottleneck place in a freeway ....could be dangerous if not careful! Stockinged legs can really catch attention. Cheers!

My own thoughts on this are a bit muddled, and I was hoping that if a few more members could/would share their thoughts it might help me. I really like some of Dan's work, and have recently been in communication with Giuseppe at Wunderkammern Gallery in Rome about the possibility of purchasing one of the pieces on exhibit there. But I'm hesitating. There is no question that the piece I like is one of the "oil and digital media" paintings that sparked the comment by Joshua Liner Gallery.
