Beyond Eden is a multi-gallery event celebrating the New Contemporary art movement in Los Angeles put together by Andrew Hosner (co-owner / curator at Thinkspace) and made possible by the City Of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. The public is invited to attend this special event and admission is free and open to all. Each successive Beyond Eden event grows larger and larger with average attendance well over 5,000 people for the past three years of the event. The New Contemporary art movement continues to build momentum on a national level and is finally starting to receive mainstream recognition from major institutions and publications the world over. With its foundation firmly planted in Southern California and a patron base here in Los Angeles that has been building over the past several decades, it’s easy to see why Beyond Eden has been welcomed with such open arms by the Los Angeles arts community and has become an anticipated annual event. Beyond Eden 2013 will showcase the works of four of California's finest New Contemporary art galleries and will be held during the weekend of October 12th and 13th with an opening night celebration planned for Saturday, October 12th. Participating galleries include C.A.V.E. Gallery (Venice, CA), Copro Gallery (Santa Monica, CA), Spoke Art (San Francisco, CA), and Thinkspace (Culver City, CA). In addition to the works on display from the participating galleries, Beyond Eden 2013 will also feature live painting demonstrations throughout the gallery inside and out alongside a special showcase of Los Angeles street and graffiti artists presented by Thinkspace and curated by local photographer Birdman. This year will also see the tradition continue of honoring those that help to push our movement forward. This year’s honoree will be Greg Escalante (Juxtapoz Magazine / Copro Gallery). About the location: The Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery opened in 1971 and is comprised of a 10,000 square foot Gallery and facility located on the sprawling grounds of Olive Hill in the Barnsdall Art Park. The park overlooks the City of Los Angeles and is also home to the famous, historic Frank Lloyd Wright Hollyhock House and Junior Art Center and Barnsdall Park Theatre. Under the Department of Cultural Affairs, LAMAG is the premier city-run gallery that focuses on contemporary art, particularly the work of living Southern California artists. Presented by: 12oz. Each year at BEYOND EDEN I like to showcase someone that I feel has had an indelible impact on the development of the New Contemporary art movement. This year's honoree is Greg Escalante. Greg Escalante co-founded Juxtapoz Art Magazine with artist Robert Williams, Craig Stecyk and others in 1993. Juxtapoz Magazine was founded on the idea that there was an unrecognized art movement taking place that had no voice and was being completely ignored by the mainstream art world, its institutions and publications. Juxtapoz started from this premise and grew to the #1 selling art magazine in the world. He also co-founded Copro/Nason Fine Arts (now Copro Gallery) in 1993 with Doug Nason as a way to promote and deal in this new art scene. Greg was a trustee at Laguna Art Museum (8 years), Orange County Museum of Art (1 year), founding president of Huntington Beach Art Center (4 years) and up to the present: founding president Cal State Fullerton’s Grand Central Art Center (13 years). In 2006 he executive produced the documentary, “The Treasures of Long Gone John”, about a seminal collector in the lowbrow movement, who went from rags to amassing a multimillion dollar collection of pop surrealist masterpieces. Escalante curated "All the Wrong Art": Juxtapoz Magazine on Film”, at MoMA February 2011 A survey of Bio-documentaries evolving from the new contemporary art scene. Escalante has curated several museum exhibitions such as “The Shack Show”, “Rick Griffin: Heart and Torch”, assisted in the curation of “Kustom Kulture”, at Laguna Art Museum and “Kustom Kulture II”, “ Edgar Leeteg: Father of the Black Velvet Painting”, at the Huntington Beach Art Center. One of his most recent curatorial endeavors of note was the “Shack Show” at Laguna art Museum in 2010 where he was asked to solve a difficult situation when an exhibit dropped out last minute. Escalante accomplished the herculean task of creating a monumental show in record time mounting one of the most raved about exhibits in years. Kustom Kulture II was even more of a challenge when the museum lost their curator and Escalante had to oversee and perform almost every aspect of mounting the exhibit within 3 months. The show broke all museum records and garnered rave reviews. Escalante has juried art exhibitions such as Mass Consumption in 2008 at the Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum (Arizona) and The Narrative Impulse 1996, Seattle Art Museum. He is scheduled to attend a surrealist ball, give a lecture on new contemporary art, visit graduate studios and critique art at Louisiana State University in January 2014. On any given day you can expect to find Greg Escalante stand up paddle surfing the excellent waves of Southern California.

Anyone receive the preview list? I'm guessing that it is just a bit late going out, but if anyone did get it and wouldn't mind shooting a copy to me, it would be appreciated. I don't want to pester Andrew - he's probably swamped with last minute details getting things ready for the show.
