I just finished looking at Jeff Gilette's work for his upcoming show at Copro. He's sharing the gallery with the Noferin opening. I was pleasantly surprised by his work. I found them really refreshing, interesting and funny at the same time. He paints slums with iconic characters and landmarks that contrast with the depressing background. It's really fun to look for the hidden characters! I'm really excited to see these in person. I might have to get one of these. sigh... Here's my favorite piece. I loved that he put Noferin characters in it! Look for South Park characters hidden in this piece: Murakami: Here's the rest of the preview: www.copronason.com/gillweb/index.htm

Yah, I was kinda impressed too actually. I liked the murakami one. I was wondering if the noferin one was a collaboration but probably not considering all the other paintings. These remind me of background paintings for anime, especially the colors. Check it... i-seldom-do.livejournal.com/115405.html

Same, I enjoy the Murakami the most, as well as 'The Cliff'. Incredible detail and colour and I find them to be quite whimsical considering the depressing overtones. I hope he has a terrific show. Thats also a great point Sleep...you kinda expect this background from greats like 'Akira' or 'Ghost in the Shell'. Jeff should do a series based on Japan in all it's claustrophobic, overcrowded glory.

Due to a goof, we ended up getting "Mondrian" actually, as that one had sold, and in hind sight, we couldn't be more stoked, more emotion in the "Mondrian" piece - just in love with his work for some time, and this being his first show in ages, don't sleep - his work is just destined for museums. We also grabbed "Hello Kitty", that one is just over the top. Can't wait to see tomorrow when we pop in for a sneak peak in person.
Jeff's work basically is a reflection of our world, the good ol' US... reflecting on how things would be, should the bottom just fall out of everything and we all end up living 3rd world style as reflected in his paintings, where things like blocking your window from the wind with that beat up ol' Mondrian painting you found in the rubble of the local museum... doesn't seem like a big deal, as things like such won't matter anymore at that point.
His concept is stunning. Going to be a huge show for him.
