Hi all, I am recently looking at this artist www.michaelrey.net/index.php?/2014/In the past days, one of his works received many bids on paddle8, so maybe you already know him. This is the short text from paddle8: "This work is part of a series of hybrid works that the artist calls "Ibjects" because they keep a balance between picture (image) and object. The forms used are radically non-figurative, but it is impossible to relate them simultaneously to the principles of minimalist Donald Judd. The forms are too complex and absurd. Also the surface of the work is strange: the artist employs a layer of plasticine clay to obtain a special texture. This makes the work not only formally very direct, but it is also ambiguous and even enigmatic" He had a group show at Lisson London and works with Cherry&Martin LA. There will be a solo presentation at Frieze. I think this guy is working well. Any thoughs??

I love this artist, seen at Room east NY. I think the concept it's quite strong/new. I am sure he is represented by Office Baroque Gallery www.officebaroque.com/artists/23/michael-rey#worksAre you sure about Frieze solo show? That's could be a good new step forward. Can you confirm?

Some of these works really make me think of Matthew Barney's drawings and sculptures which makes me want to imbue some kind of pseudo-mythical meaning to them but that's not really where I think he's going. I kind of like what he's doing but would want to see more from him to get a better picture ... but then again the artrank crowd seems to be front running this guy too so it's not like I'll ever have a chance at anything anyway...

I agree. What I think it's important to note is that this series is not a brand new one, but a research that is going on since a while. The artist is focused on this theme and it's making of this his own personal lenguage.

Looks good, but the images are not enough in this case. You should see the works in person. Then let's wait for Frieze

With regard to the Paddle 8 text from the original post in this thread, these forms are not 'radically non-figurative' and is is not impossible to relate this all to philosophies of Donald Judd. In fact, it is quite possible. You can easily do compare/contrast with Judd's concept of specific objects and the basic tenets of minimalism(and post-minimalist practice).

I see more than anything else some similarity with the work of Steven Parrino, but maybe it's an assonance more formal than substantial. Different from all the other Craspraction? Definitely YES.

Saw in person, finally. Looks good. It's time for some critical analysis.
