I will be in LA for a few days for a conference (heliexpo) Trying to get there on Wednesday so I'll have a couple days to wander. Any suggestions on which places to visit? I'm interested in checking out some galleries, some streetwear/sneaker shops and maybe toy spots (in that order).
also anything I should definitely do/see in LA? This is only my second time and my first I was only in town for 18 hours.
Thanks in advance :-)

Thanks in advance :-) www.sourharvest.com does a good job of listing local openings, of course you need to stop by and see us, thinkspace, new image, g1988, munkyking, corey helford, span of sunset, meltdown comics, monkey house, giant robot, kid robot (think you know that one)...so much to do! I don't do the sneaker freaker thing so someone else will have to give you the low down there. What kinds of food do you live for? Musical tastes?

Thanks Carmichael! Great stuff.... (I think I may have to stop by your gallery too....you've had some great artists!)
i love asian food (any type) but also like jamaican and south american food.
music is wide open...mainly hip hop and jazz.

I would visit galleries depending on the show they have up.
Personally I would check out:
Chris Stain @ Carmichael Bob Dob @ Billy Shire Movers & Shakers @ POVevolving (big group show) Brandt Peters @ G1988 KAWS @ Honor Fraser if you are still here on saturday
In terms of food:
Luscious Dumpling - best pan fried dumplings out there (weird hours so call first and arrive early as they run out) Curryhouse - best japanese curry (a chain, but my favorite) Cafe Brazil - great brazilian food ala carte Bossa Nova - never ordered anything I didn't like (kinda brazilian/italian) Shik Do Rak - very good korean barbeque because of the rice wraps and dipping sauce
Streetwear/Shoes I'm not too sure but I assume Undefeated, Supreme, etc...
Something else to keep in mind, if you try driving between 2:30 and 7:30 anywhere, expect major traffic, so start early and between those times try and stay in the same area where you can drive local, and even then not too far. Good luck.

Sleepboy- thanks for the advice. i'm definitely trying to make that kaws show and the movers and shakers.
is there a good public transit like in NYC or will i need to drive around everywhere?

You're definitely going to need a car to get around. Public transit, put simply, sucks. Be sure to check out all of the gallery/store hours before heading out. Most of the streetwear stores don't open till 10-11 and galleries don't open until 1-2pm.
Other streetwear shops you will want to hit up: Bape, The Hundreds, Johnny Cupcakes (really cool store design)
In addition to the grub sleepboy mentioned: Savoy - Best Hainan chicken rice ever. Hot sauce. Lots of it. Phillipes - A mean French Dip w/ hot mustard. Crazy busy. Cheap. Delicious. Carney's - Excellent hot dogs & chili dogs. Skip Pink's, go here instead. Elite - Awesome dim sum. Great quality, unique twist to dishes. It's going to cost you though - about 2.5-3 times the normal dim sum prices. Cocary - A cross between hot pot and Korean BBQ. Cheap. Meat is well marinated. Self-serve. Open extremely late. Be sure this is the last meal of the day - the smell will cling to your clothes.

Thank you to everyone for the good advice! Managed to get around quite abit and checked out the Bill McMullen show, tried getting into the KAWS show opening night (did make it back the day before I left) and decided to spend a day out in Joshua Tree instead of inside the gallery circuit.
I left CT in 19 degree weather and came to LA it was 70s the entire time so had to venture out to Joshua Tree. Also checked out curryhouse and savoy - it's as good as you guys said it was!
I also made a personal stop to the Chinese American Museum. I've always been proud of my heritage (2nd generation Taiwanese) and never really seen a whole museum dedicated to our history here. For the past 3 years I've been fighting to get an Asian Pacific American Commission here in CT. We finally got it passed this year but all funding is scheduled to be cut due to the economy. It's a great museum and has an amazing exhibition of photographs by Corky Lee. While at honor fraser also got interested in a couple other artists Honor has in her office - Eric Parker, Paul Kassman and Rosson Crow. Amazing stuff.
I will definitely need to go out there again.

two words for Chinese food...Hunan Cafe...simply the best you will have...EVER Hunan on San Vicente? thats my joint! Hunan cafe is so good, the best Mu Shu Chicken I've ever had, but I seriously think they use MSG in the food. I'm super sensitive to it and have had a really bad reaction after eating there.

Hunan cafe is so good, the best Mu Shu Chicken I've ever had, but I seriously think they use MSG in the food. I'm super sensitive to it and have had a really bad reaction after eating there. But yet we keep going over and over...I don't even care about the MSG!

Love LA. You should definitely check out Bergamot Station - www.bergamotstation.com - it's a complex with some terrific galleries. Copronason, Robert Berman, Track 16 to name a few. If you want a treat, go to Hatfields. One of the top 5 meals I've ever had.
