There was a band already with the name "Exit Through the Gift Shop" so in exchange of them changing their name, Banksy gave them an original.

pretty cool article.... www.mirror.co.uk/celebs/news/2010/05/04/kate-breaks-the-banksy-115875-22231742/HE PAINTS £150,000 MURAL AT MOSS HOUSE When Kate Moss wants a wall painted she doesn't call the local handyman... she rings Banksy. The guerilla graffiti artist has been given the keys to Kate Moss's mansion after she commissioned him to do a bizarre one-off mural. The supermodel, 36, wants her and several of her celebrity pals - including Prime Minister Gordon Brown - depicted through the ages. Measuring around 12ft by 18ft, the paintjob is understood to have cost Mossy up to £150,000. Should have gone to Homebase. We're told: "Kate is a big fan of Banksy and has several prints of his, plus a few originals, collected at home. He has even done a portrait of Moss herself. "She explained exactly what she wanted doing and Banksy gave her a quote. It wasn't cheap. Kate asked for an entire wall to be painted, showing Kate on the catwalk at all stages of her career - from a fresh-faced 16-year-old to her last appearance earlier this year. "The painting also shows various wellknown faces including pals Sadie Frost, Naomi Campbell, Lily Allen and even Gordon Brown and his wife, Sarah. It is pretty eclectic." You can say that again. And we're told that, among all the beauties, there's a few beasts as well. Our source says: "Weirdly, the fashion show 'audience' also features a few animals. It is surrealist in nature, and extremely eye-catching.

Could not believe that Banksy hit up Detroit. Went out first thing at 6:00 in the morning before work to see if I could find them. Lucky that I did, since you can see that the process of buffing the Diamond Girl piece is already underway. I doubt it's still up there now. A shame that it couldn't last longer. I guess it will be coming to an ebay auction in the near future.

Wow greekboy, looks like you could have finished the job on the diamond girl and taken the wall. Wonder why they left the job unfinished. Looks like Mr. B has reached NY.

I really contemplated it but felt it wasn't right. I didn't want to run the risk of damaging the piece and felt that it belonged in the street. I regret it now seeing that it was taken ours later, by a group on the Giant.org forum that created a website of their escapades. I did try and contact a local television station and the Detroit Institute of Arts, but it was too early in the morning and not enough interest.

I know buffing peoples pieces in graf culture is all part of the game but this is a real shame and if this wasn’t a Banksy this would not have happened so quickly. Come on NY, any time I go to Cali I see all kinds of great pieces by high profile artist and no one has touched them, what's the deal?!

Took this snap of the recently uncovered banksy Bulldoodle in Manchester this morning. It had been under plants for the last ten years so is a bit of banksy archeology I guess. It's now behind two wire fences and a perspex box whilst it's fate is decided (I think the substation it is on is due for demolition). It's a bit tired looking but, if nothing else, it's a nice reminder of the days banksy would put things on the street for reasons other than publicizing a movie.

nah. was just planying around last time. i love the piece. but at the time, banksy appeared to be backing away from the whole situation. and while i don't think anyone really doubted he had executed the piece even back then, he has since legitimized it with an image on his website. unfortunately, pc won't authenticate street pieces anymore, as they were not created with the intention of being commercial works of art. sent a quick email over last night to confirm and that's the response i got..which is perfectly understandable. people would start getting seriously creative with their deomolition projects if pc would authenticate every street piece, effectively giving the thief free reign in the auction circles. i certainly don't need a stamp of approval to enjoy a piece of art. however, with a banksy, i wouldn't pay stupid money, pending this gets substantially higher, unless it was supported by the artist. now, if this managed to stay in the 5-10k range, i could possible talk myself into grabbing it and enjoying it indefinitely on my own walls. but i'm going to stay away regardless. i certainly don't approve of the stealing of public works of art for profit and ultimately bidding on this would be support such activities. if i had stolen it myself, that'd be a different story it should be interesting to see where this ends up, though.

what happened to the original listing? oh and..it was ended early for some reason, probably due to it not getting much activity initially as a result of the uncertainty around it. hence, someone's legitimate question on the listing regarding whether it would be pulled again if it didn't reach a certain price level.

Looks like not many people were interested or had definite reservations about the circumstances and relative uncertainty surrounding the piece. I looked at the bid history and there were only two bidders willing to go north of 7k. Perhaps people simply didn't want to support such activities, rightly so in a sense. The upshoot is that whoever bought the piece did so for the right reasons, as it won't be an easy resell anyway you splice it without authentication. I don't see them authenticating this piece anytime soon, for all the reasons one could logically deduct, even if the someone knows someone somewhere that could pull some strings. Perhaps a decade or two down the road, the artist will have throw in the towel on resisting the official validation of public works that have been stolen and sold. Who knows. The piece is decent enough and I might've thrown in a serious bid around where it topped out at 7k before jumping up at the last moment, as that's really all I could justify on something like this. In the end, I simply couldn't talk myself into it.

moral qualms aside, someone got themselves a relative bargain for what seems to be an original banksy - especially considering what people are willing to pay for his prints.
still think it sucks that it was cut out though.

Possibly a new Banksy in Hastings. Also, what looks like a limited edition set for "Exit Through The Gift Shop". Anyone have details?
