looks like from that video that the billboard was not painted in situ. space was probably rented... more paid for advertising from banksy - something he was always against previously.

Nice to see that the ugliness that ensues every time Banksy lifts a finger is now being exported to the US. I'm not one to give the man much credit but he certainly knows how to highlight human nature's barbaric greed.

Video of the billboard being taken down and the fight that immediately broke out over the piece. tinyurl.com/49ewvn7wow, that got ugly fast. they must really be into art to get so passionate about the piece... anyone know the details on this? Fox 11 local news had a segment last night about Banksy being in town. They interviewed the guy in this video, who is the land owner of the car wash. He was beaten up a bit, had bruises and big knots on his head. I guess he and the guy hired to take it down got physical after the camera stopped and before the cops came. In the end, the crewman hired by CBS took the Banky piece down and drove off with it. It now sits in the CBS studio lot. A company called "The Light Group" paid for the advertising billboard, and CBS has promised to give them the Banksy that was painted on top of their billboard. Here's some more info. "A rep for The Light Group -- a management company based in Las Vegas -- tells us CBS' outdoor advertising department is responsible for peeling off the billboard ... and they tore it down without ever contacting Light Group management. The Light Group rep tells us, "We're extremely pissed ... It's our billboard that got tagged .. it's not their billboard ... CBS clearly has ZERO appreciation for art!!!" The rep added some parting praise for the Academy Award nominated artist, "We were flattered Banksy tagged on our ad -- it was epic." The Light Group was told it will be allowed to keep the work of art -- so far, no word on what it plans to do with it."

Thanks for the update Steve. I would love to see the piece when they unfold it - I hope non of the paint was still wet because then the Light Group is going to have one large creased abstract Banksy.

Just for continuity sake, here's another piece from LA. Where is this one? I'd love to steal it I mean see it before it's gone. I'm kidding of course. It really does suck how much pressure there is to see these pieces before they are ripped down or hauled away.

Here's another update. It's now in Vegas, in the possession of the company that paid for the ad space on the billboard. latimesblogs.latimes.com/awards/2011/02/banksy-billboard-going-to-vegas.html And here's a pic i snapped off today on my way to lunch. There were about a dozen people snapping pics off. It's been like this for a few days, pretty much from 9am to 9pm. And, the Charlie Brown piece was taken and is now on ebay. The people who took it were kind enough to leave this for us instead

I'm not one to give the man much credit but he certainly knows how to highlight human nature's barbaric greed. That came and went last time he was in LA for the ETTGS premier, where nearly every piece - be it in LA, Detroit, San Fran - was removed. But this is getting pretty ridiculous. Does the rush to break down the work seem even worse in the States? On the whole, it has effectively become some bizarre and disturbing social experiment, where we are all the subjects. The frenzy is astounding, not only to steal the work but the effort expended to see the work by so many in person.

I take it you saw pictures of the queue for the show in bristol ? astounding is the word. It's like some kind of street art paparazzi... I'm sure someone will coin a word.... perhaps banka ratsi. (a flock of people who gather to photograph a work of street art before it's removed ... by force) .. or worse still a flash bank .. who knows.

Oh and there's also this one that hadn't been located prior to him putting them all on his site.. As already pointed out, it's a riff on the illegal immigrant signage lining the freeways around the San Diego area. Always got a kick out of them.

That elephant one is on the PCH heading out to Malibu and we were driving out about 2PM on Sunday for a lil' day trip and that wasn't up yet... No shit. Thanks for filling the void. I knew I distinctly recognized it for some reason. When I fly out there, I either head up La Cienega to W Hollywood to see my sister. Or much more often, I head up to stay with my mom in Ventura. I've driven that PCH stretch of Santa Monica through Malibu and further so many times I feel like I could do it in my sleep.

Always got a kick out of them. yeah, this one seemed quite simple to me at first, but might be one of my favorite recent pieces since I found out about the background of it.. classic Banksy I'd say.. From - capturingbanksy.wordpress.com/2011/02/22/banksy-street-sign/"For those struggling to find meaning in the recent street piece by Banksy in LA (pictured below) depicting a daughter and her parents flying a kite, the piece depicts the same graphics used on road signs between Mexico and LA warning of immigrant families sprinting across the highway."

Still not too late to place a wager on the Banksy win Paying 3 to 1 at most online betting houses. Even though I'd love nothing more for him to win and think it's the best documentary in the bunch (with Retrepo being a close second, even though Inside Job is the favorite), I just don't see the Academy giving it to him regardless of how the voting shakes out. Strongly considered throwing 500 bones down though, just for shits and giggles. I've got an old account for when I used to like to make Sunday football that much more interesting. Probably a bad idea.

I didn't even know you could bet on that. I wonder how they determine what odds to offer, its not like sports or other games where you have a large sample size to draw from.
