Perhaps those that spread it thought the photoshoppery was obvious, as anyone with a knowledge of the original Banksy would be, and it was just one of many joke takes on the Ecce Homo 'restoration'.
Then, further down the line, people with no direct knowledge of either see it propagated by higher-ups, and take it as fact.
Chaos ensues, as it does everywhere on the Internet.

I read couple of article about the background of this "show", and must say Im on the side that thinks these particular works DON'T belong in there!..
I think that as much as the ceiling of Sistine Chapel shouldn't be in Louvre, these works should stay and end where the guy who made them intended..
I understand sometimes people can't miss a chance to own a piece of street art history, so they take a Banksy sign, Invader tiles, etc, but to build a show around something you took, with artist and his PR being strongly against it, is a whole new level of lame..
also, I dont think Banksy's work is especially amazing when it comes to his technique and skills, so people should see it in person.. the biggest part of whats amazing about it, is where/when his pieces are placed.. and that is ruined the moment your concrete saw touched the surface on which the piece was done..
like this, these are cool looking stencil works on concrete, but when they were on a wall of a shop in Palestine, painted for the Santa's Ghetto show, they were a great piece by a great artist...

Street art belongs on the street end of. If that's an 'all-or-nothing' statement, then I'll have to disagree with it. IMO, you need a certain percentage captured from the wild in order to save for posterity, like a breeding program for an endangered species, but in this case breeding scholarship and continued interest in the genre. I'd think things would be far less interesting, for example, if all the Haring subway drawings had been left & lost, if we didn't have vintage NYC subway windows and doors, full of a generation of tags, in private collections and museums, if all we had left of KAWS bus-stop distortions were old photographs, etc., etc. There is a preservation aspect that I appreciate.

I hate to admit it, but the pieces look much better than I thought they would. They did a good job when they removed them. That being said, I think they belong in a museum and not for public sale. Not really fair for the artist to not make any money from work that they put up for free to make a statement.
