Congratulations to Amy Sol for nearly selling out her "Karmic Magic" show before the opening night reception. I suspect she has leapfrogged Audrey Kawasaki in the pricing of her artwork. I'm not really sure about that... I'll have to look it up (or hopefully someone else can confirm it).
I did however compare her last solo show with this one...
Looks like prices increased by 33% this time.
Copro Nason August 2007 "Tonight We Travel by Dream"
18"x24" $7000 (The releasing of Mimi's Embers) $16.2037 x 432
12"x17" $3,500 (The Math Book that Never Opened) $17.16 x 204
24"x24" $8,000 (The Departure of Winter Sprites) $13.89 x 576
12"x24" $4,250 (Seapony of the Moonlight Pond) $14.76 x 288
10"x15" $3,000 (Lilybell and Sleeping Babes) $20 x 150
17"x12" $3,500 (Moon paper) $17.16 x 204
18"x24" $7,500 (Over the Bridge and Into the Theme) $16.2037 x 432
24"x18" $7,500 (Leaving Downey Cloud Island) $16.2037 x 432
16"x23" $5,000 (Gardening Under Cinnamon Sky) $13.59 x 368
17"x11" $3,500 (Friendship Lantern) $18.72 x 187
Avg Price per square inch: $16.38911
Thinkspace June 2008 "Karmic Magic"
19"x24" $10,000 (Kokiri Carousel) $21.93 x 456
20"x26" $10,000 (Everything) $19.23 x 520
24"x20" $9,000 (Flying Fish) $18.75 x 480
20"x24" $9,000 (Trampoline) $18.75 x 480
19"x20" $7,500 (Migration) $19.74 x 380
15"x19" $6,000 (Little Brown Bird) $21.05 x 285
12"x16" $4,800 (Dust Wings) $25 x 192
12"x16" $4,800 (Keep us together) $25 x 192
11"x14" $4,200 (Dream Begins) $27.27 x 154
Avg Price per square inch: $21.858
That comes out to a 33% increase in overall prices in a span of about 10 months. Using square inch averages seems to be
the only fair way to compare paintings that were not identical in size. Copro's prices for the larger pieces 16" x 23" and above were all over the map (from $5,000 to $8,000) so that was a quirk I thought amusing. I'm sure Copro's pricing was kind of arbitrary ("That piece looks cooler, so let's price it this way. This one is nice, but not one of her best, let's knock the price down here..." etc etc)
Still, at a glance you'll see it's actually the smaller pieces that really skyrocketed in price, percentage-wise (Compare "Friendship Lantern" with "Dust Wings" or "Keep us Together". Compare "Lilybell and Sleeping Babes" with "Dream Begins").
I came up with the idea to crunch the numbers several months ago... but was too lazy or didn't care enough (about a given artist) to spend the hour doing it at the time.
I'm sure if you own an Amy Sol painting, you'll be thrilled by the above data. If you were hoping to obtain one of her paintings anytime soon or are just following pricing trends in general, you might be dismayed.
Still, there are wildcard intangibles we will never be able to completely factor in and compare equally: How "improved" is the artwork itself? Is the subject matter less inspired this time? or more so? What are the quality of the frames this time versus last? etc etc. All subjective attributes.
Note: The drawings with watercolor paint were not included in this analysis.
