We can't have a street art section without Blek le Rat. The man is an f-ing legend! And if anybody lives in LA and is a fan of street art then you need to get down to Subliminal Projects (Shepard Fairey's gallery) and check this out before it's too late. This is his first solo in the states ever. Here's a couple things I was able to pick up at the show. Los Angeles print in flat black - edition of only 15 - it's HUGE at almost 3feet x 6feet and then the set of 4 prints which are actually photos of his work on the streets taken by his photographer wife Sybill Prou. Edition of 100.

I just got my LA print It's bigger than my room I think. I mean: a) I had a hell of a hard time finding a spot to even unroll it. I finally settled on my bed b) I couldn't get high enough to enable my iphone to take a pic of the entire thing. c) was a complete pregnant dog to roll back up correctly d) Will cost approximately $53,243.41 to frame. I actually second all the above mentioned... ;D

ok, I had to say this at some point - Im not amazed with his work at all..
I do have a big respect for him cause of the fact that he's the pioneer of stencil street art, and he inspired a whole new generation of street artists with his work (staring with Banksy), but I really dont find his work appealing.. visually it's nothing I haven't seen, and message wise I never seen anything in it...
Im not saying he doesn't deserve the attention he gets, and shouldn't have big shows, but for me his work looks like many other stencil artists out there..
now, Im never firm on my opinions, so please let me know if there is something Im missing out about his work...

i think much the same can be said for pretty much any artist who uses stencils to present his artwork within the confines of a gallery Sal.
the genre is pretty much bereft of artistic merit as a whole, and is over-run by talentless individuals who have jumped on the bandwagon to try and cash in on a ship that sailed approx 6 years ago.
blek is of course a pioneer of the genre, so credit where credit is due, but stencils in galleries i find pretty dull as a general rule.

yea, lets not beat around the bush fellas. This work makes me want to vomit. It is graphic design void of any emotion or soul.

To be honest, Mr Brainwash has done better, but that ain't saying much! graphic design is no bad thing scott. these pieces are not great, but i wouldn't call them graphic design. i certainly wouldn't use graphic design as a derogatory term. just boring stencils. mr brainwash has neither heritage, talent nor an ounce of artistry in him.

mr brainwash has neither heritage, talent nor an ounce of artistry in him. I was gonna say the same thing.. he might be a bit more appealing (cause of using more pop, familiar iconography, and NOT cause of quality), but he certainly doesn't have 1 tiny bit of cred that Blek has..

This ^^^ With few exceptions I find them very out of place almost unnecessary. BLR - he might be a pioneer but I have pretty much always found his stuff flat and pretty much boring/predictable even when placed on the street.

That is a fair and welcome point Sven. I guess that would be offensive to anyone in graphic design. Not my intention.

One of the stencil uses that I love and find exciting each time is when done by c215. i'd also have to say what Logan Hicks has been doing with stencils looks great in a gallery.
