Yes, yes - Providence is up in this with the esteemed Jen Corace! It's not easy to write an email about one of your dearest friends, but here goes:
Jen Corace makes the most killer brunch. No joke. The other day she whipped up some home fries that she insists were seasoned with "nothing special, you know, the usual" and knocked my Sunday into orbit. I like to walk around with Jen and point out colors. I like to stroll with her as we fill the time muttering sarcastic things we won't remember. The other night I watched Jen and Will Schaff fake-fight at a political fundraiser and after he'd taught her how to break an arm, it seemed like she needed a slogan to warn potential attackers. I came up with: "check yourself before Jen wrecks yourself" on the bike ride home. It's awkward, I know, but it makes me laugh, and this will be the first time she's heard of it. When we parted ways I said "I wish this bike ride could last forever" and I meant it.
So then Jen Corace goes into her studio and draws things that transcend other things and I am left reeling and sort of dumbfounded from the strange miracle that the person you were just mulling over antennas with at Radio Shack somehow, in some secret and inexplicable way, adjourned to her studio and created something that feels bigger than we are. Like when a band comes together and plays a song that moves you in this crazy way and the sound becomes bigger than the band itself; that somehow rattle chords inside of you that you never really fathomed before.
I guess that's what great art does in general, right? But then to sit on the couch with the great artist herself and watch the A-Team, knowing full well that the person beside you totally has her finger to a secret pulse, she's got your internal number, and yet - despite all this - you cannot help chastising her for climbing ladders with pins in her mouth. (!!!!!!!) Or insisting she certainly does not need a new iPhone, as her old one is not even a year old. (!!)
The print launches tonight at 7:30 EDT Providence time.
