Los Angeles – Black Maria Gallery is proud to announce the solo exhibition of Courtney Brims on the Project Wall. “Lost On the Way” features a collection of new works and limited edition prints that take you off the winding path and into the deep woods reminiscent of a fairy tale. Focusing on themes of displacement, abandonment and loss of self, the exhibition tells tales of forgotten circus performers and neglected strays that wander unseen, trying to find their place in the world. Courtney Brims is an Australian self-taught artist based in Brisbane who graduated with a degree in interior design before turning her attention to art and illustration in 2008. Her drawings are influenced by Victorian illustration, fairytales, daydreams, nightmares and childhood memories. Working with pencils, Courtney creates dreamy worlds of lost girls and bewildering creatures, focusing on the beauty of nature and its dominance over time. She combines subtle surrealism and intricate detailing into her works that provoke a sense of curiosity and nostalgia. Courtney had her first solo show in 2008 at Sydney’s Monster Children Gallery and has had a number of group exhibitions across Australia. This is her first time showing in the US. “Lost on the Way” will remain open through Saturday, August 8th, 2009.
