Does insurance only cover original art or prints as well?
If I go the route of original purchase price, how does that work for secondary market purchases? Paypal receipt?
Mostly worried about earthquakes, but my collection is still relatively small.

Secondary market just needs either receipt or appraiser I guess. Earthquakes is hard unless you have specialized art insurance I think, just a rider on homeowners insurance will just extend the normal house insurance which doesn't cover earthquakes usually.

I have a blanket rider that offers replacement for my prints and lower value works so theoretically, if my print costs more to replace in the future they will pony up or they could end up paying less than I did. Haven't tested mine out yet and hope to keep it that way

I have a personal articles policy with State Farm that covers me for the purchase price of my collection. It's designed for items like expensive jewelry and artworks, intended to be on top of your general home insurance that would cover stuff like furniture, appliances and whatnot. For items that I bought directly from the artist, I gave the insurance company the email where we discussed the transaction and a copy of the cancelled check or PayPal confirmation.

I'm with State Farm. They've been great about adding works generally based on whatever evidence of purchase. I had a bit of an issue re works purchased from abroad, but I called my agent and told him I was going to pull everything and he got it done. I think you really only want to pay big bucks for an appraisal in the 6 plus figure range.

Does anyone have any experience with/heard about SafeCo? Travelers keeps raising my premium for no other reason than " your house costs more to rebuild this year".

Im not familiar with SafeCo, but I have a policy with Chubb and have been more than happy with them. If it would help, I'd be more than happy to pass along my contact details. Let me know via PM if so.

I use Collectibles Insurance Agency (CIA) as I have a large collection of toys, statues and other swag besides art. But they do cover fine art as well. I had to notify them of what types of art I own. They don't require line item details on pieces unless they are $5,000 or more. Just to be safe, I do send them photos and details on originals if they are say over a grand (just because I'd rather be safe than sorry). Prices for coverage aren't too bad and they are nice people who actually have humans who answer the phone! www.collectinsure.com

I had a really bad experience with SafeCo when I was just starting to drive and I'll never use them again. We are currently insured with Amica for Car/Home/Life. Still need to get some art insurance and this thread was a good reminder.

Does anyone know if a personal articles policy covering art is location specific? Can you send the works out of state or out of country and if they're damaged you're still covered?

To the Europeans on this forum:
I have State Farm in the US but apparently there is an issue with my works being insured by them while I'm abroad. Given that my 2 year move to Switzerland is imminent, and I'm bringing my art with me, I'll need to get it insured.
Does anyone have a recommendation on insurers of art in Europe, and an agent they can send me contact information for?
Best,
Weezy

Would be very interested in that, too, as I have my collection covered "only" through my regular "home owner's insurance" but that is only against fire or theft, not against "things than can happen just so"...
