Check out this neat brain trick by artist MAC.
This was painted as if it were a photo negative- whatever should be light was painted dark and vise versa. All those black marks on the face end up becoming highlights when you take a picture of the wall and invert all the colors. it then looks "normal". Painting like that is kind of a brain exercise. Get the image as big as you can on your monitor . . . stare at it for about 30 seconds without moving your eyes from your focus spot (like the nostril). Then shut your eyes tightly and wait. The image will invert automatically, and the green will turn to flesh tones in your shut eyes (similar to what's been done in photoshop below).
